Providing everyday language stimulation builds communication skills. Communication includes verbal language, gestures, eye contact, facial expression, and body movements. Here are 4 tips to stimulate language and communication skills:
Deliver verbal language stimulation in multiple ways: Babble talk, varying pitch on voice, Singing, words, phrases. “Wa wa water. Are ya thirsty? Say ahhh. Drink water now.”
Model verbal language and gestures by labeling and describing things and actions in your environment. “The orange carrot is in the round bowl. It’s your spoon. See the milk?”
Narrate daily activities and experiences. “I’m dipping my spoon in the bowl, scoop scoop scoop, here is orange carrot, tasty tasty.”
Read books, posters, food containers, toy labels etc to connect verbal language and written words.
The main idea is babies and toddlers are listening and soaking up all of the language stimulation around them. During everyday activities and life, “give them what you are supposed to have given.”
