I can’t say this enough- an increase in diagnoses does not actually mean there’s an increase in Autistic people.

Could there be an increase in true prevalence? Sure. But it’s not the only explanation - and more importantly it’s not the most supported one.

What we do know:
✅ Many kids diagnosed today wouldn’t have been identified 30-40 years ago. Really even 10-20 years ago.
✅ Adults are being diagnosed at dramatically higher rates, especially women, BIPOC, and nonspeaking or multiply disabled individuals. You could even say these are “skyrocketing” 🧐
✅ Diagnosis depends on access, awareness, and clinical understanding. Which anyone familiar with high masking Autism will tell you is hard to find today.

Autistic people have always been here. Long before the term was clinically described in 1925. We’re not new. We’re just finally being seen.

The autism spectrum isn’t linear. Functioning levels are not helpful to understand a person’s needs = and these can change from day to day or over time. Love this post by AutismSketches that explains it! ❤️

Adults’ digital habits could be hazardous to children’s speech and language development. It's time to act.

🙌🏼 THIS is why it is so important to get a child evaluated early on- and not “wait until they are 3” or older! Acknowledging your child may have a delay is HARD, but it’s more important that we set them up for success! 👍🏼👍🏼 if you agree!

** Please note the numbers here are averages, so it will still be considered typical development for a child to have more or less words - “normal” is a wide range! I would recommend a referral if your 18 month old child has less than 10 words 🙂

You have likely seen photos in magazines of the quintessential playroom. It is piled high with endless toys and games for children. Your child does NOT need toys upon toys. In fact, too many toys can be overwhelming. When children have too many toys, they end up moving quickly from one toy to another which can limit their play and language opportunities and contribute to decreased attention.

Consider a toy rotation. This is an excellent way to reduce clutter and stay organized. Start by dividing your toys into sets, leave one set out, store the other set, and then rotate them whenever you would go shopping for something new. Clear bins, like these, are a great way to get started with a and keep you !
