πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™ March 21 is a special day to celebrate friends who were blessed with an extra chromosome! This day is all about celebrating friends with Down syndrome and awareness about what makes them special.
πŸ’›Down syndrome occurs when there is a an extra copy in chromosome 21. This is Trisomy 21 also known as Down syndrome. You and I have just two copies of Chromosome 21. People with Down syndrome have 3 copies.
πŸ’™Approximately one in every 772 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition. Often times their weeks are full of therapies- occupational, speech, and physical therapy to assist in their milestones. Because their muscle strength and tone is much lower than most, it takes more effort to learn to sit, crawl, and walk for example.
πŸ’› Research indicates that early intervention improves outcomes for children with Down syndrome. This assistance can begin shortly after birth and often continues until a child reaches age 3. After that age, most children receive interventions and treatment through their local school district.

πŸ’™On March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate and raise awareness by wearing our brightest, loudest socks.
And why is WDSD held on March 21st? 21:3 (chromosome 21, 3 copies = 21st day of 3rd month of the year) easy to remember!

πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ§¦ So TOMORROW wear your craziest socks for our friends with Down Syndrome! I have so many and they have all made an impact on me over the years. They are the sweetest, most loving friends you will find. As my son said, they really have the biggest hearts of anyone I know. πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›

March is cerebral palsy awareness month!
πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š I’ve had the pleasure of working with many children with cerebral palsy. This neurological condition occurs when there is an injury to the brain either before or during birth that affects the muscles- either in the arms or legs, or both, and usually the muscles for eating and speaking. β€œCerebral” refers to the brain and β€œpalsy” refers to the impairment of motor function. These kiddos (and adults) work harder than any of us could ever comprehend. Their drive to do what others do and accomplish tasks, whether big or small, is inspiring. I read this somewhere and love it:
πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š don’t take for granted each step you take, each time you comb your hair, dress, or even just say hello to a friend. Somewhere, someone with cerebral palsy fights for a chance to complete these tasks with independence. πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

>>Did you know?
~Cerebral palsy is the most commonly diagnosed childhood motor disability in the U.S.
~Most children with cerebral palsy have spastic CP. (spastic refers to the muscle tone. Their muscles are tighter than typical)
~ The sooner targeted early interventions are started for infants and children with cerebral palsy, the better their motor and cognitive outcomes.

PT will show you the best way to position your child for optimal alignment and to discourage arching. PT can give you ways to play with your preemie that encourage good head and trunk control, as well as improvements in range of motion. There are lots of ways to incorporate tummy time to make it more comfortable for your child- and you! If there are reflexes that haven’t been integrated but should have, PT can address those through exercises and encouraging a chiropractic visit.

I recommend that preemies are seen at or around 4 months of age. It doesn’t mean that all preemies need ongoing physical therapy, but it’s a great age to catch any asymmetries or issues early. πŸ’œ

STOP βœ‹πŸ» and read this: are you concerned about your baby’s head shape? Has your pediatrician mentioned a flat spot or used the word plagiocephaly? Don’t panic! But DO seek out a pediatric physical therapist. Don’t rush to get a helmet or cranial band. DO work on repositioning, range of motion, and strengthening with the guidance of your PT. Don’t go buy a repositioning pillow. DO ask your PT about ways to reposition your baby without a fancy pillow and how to play with him in a variety of positions. β€οΈπŸ‘Ά

This is a great question, and I love when parents are proactive! The typical range for independent walking is 12-16 months. If your child isn’t trying to stand alone or cruise along furniture by 14 months, I would start asking questions and incorporating some purposeful play with your child. Then if they aren’t walking by 15-16 months, I would seek out a pediatric physical therapist for an assessment. Sometimes it just takes a little time each day to purposefully work on helping your child stand, cruise along furniture, etc, to gain confidence. Other times there may be reasons to get PT intervention early- feet that turn in/out, pronating feet, no balance at all or attempts at standing alone, weak trunk, low muscle tone (usually described as squishy), or asymmetries. If you have questions about your child, feel free to reach out for a consultation! πŸ€—

Having my own practice has been a dream of mine for a long time, but I never thought it was possible. I’m so thankful that I finally listened to the nudge and acted on those dreams. πŸ€— It has been the biggest blessing! This cutie is rocking the single leg stance position!
πŸ€—πŸŽ‰
Once your child has mastered standing and walking independently, you can increase the challenge by working on skills that require single leg balance.

β€’stepping over obstacles
β€’stepping on and off a small step
β€’balance beam
β€’stepping into/out of a low basket/large container

Activities that require maintaining a single leg stance require more core activation and postural control and increase hip and leg strength. I love using the one leg up/one leg on floor position to challenge balance, strength, and stability. This helps with being a successful walker and leads them straight to those fun skills after learning how to walk such as kicking a ball, stairs and running. So have fun with your toddler and take those gross motor skills to the next level! πŸ€—

For many years I’ve dreamed of having my own business. Life happened and I tossed that idea aside. However, I still had a nudge inside of me to create something of my own. I had been praying about it, and waiting patiently... Last year I began to feel the nudge again, and He clearly showed me that Thrive was it. ❀️
