Roller Derby Reflections
This weekend I had the opportunity to support the Charlotte Roller Derby team and wow, what an experience!
As a little girl, I loved to roller skate and used to watch roller derby on TV, completely mesmerized. It’s been decades since I’ve seen a match, and I’d never been to one in person until now.
I’ll admit, I had no idea what the rules were but just watching was fascinating. Each team has one jammer who tries to push through a crowd of defenders linking arms, forming a wall, and throwing in a few body and butt checks. Sometimes the jammer would get knocked out of bounds and have to start again. Sometimes their teammates would help them break through. And sometimes, after lots of pushing and persistence, they’d finally make it past the wall.
What stood out to me wasn’t just the athleticism; it was the determination.
No matter how many times they fell, they got back up.
No matter how strong the wall, they kept pushing.
And when they needed it, they allowed others to help them through.
It reminded me so much of life and healing.
We can let the walls around us stop us, or we can keep pushing toward our goals.
We can isolate, or we can allow others to support us.
We can stay down, or we can get back up again.
Healing is like that too — we do the work, take a break, and then keep going.
And at the end, just like the roller derby teams high-fiving each other and the fans, we can celebrate how far we’ve come.
So here’s your reminder:
Keep getting back up.
Accept help when you need it.
Rest when you must.
And don’t forget to high-five yourself for how far you’ve already come.
Both teams left the arena smiling — a beautiful reminder that it’s not always about winning, but about showing up, trying again, and doing it with heart.
