Static Stretching
If you’re a runner, should you be doing these?

➡️It depends on WHY you are stretching.

✅If you are stretching because you are sore after a hard run, that’s great, gentle stretching will feel good and help reduce some of that soreness.

✅If you are stretching as part of your cool down routine, that’s great too. In fact, that’s a really good time to get the most out of your stretching.

✅If you are stretching because you need to improve mobility in a shortened muscle to help other muscles perform better, great, proceed!

🛑BUT….If you are stretching because you have a muscle that always ‘feels tight’, and you stretch, stretch, stretch and it still always feels tight, you probably don’t need to be stretching that muscle and what you likely need is STRENGTHENING.

That muscle that always feel tight despite always stretching, it could be overworking to compensate for someone else not doing their job due to weakness or inhibition.

For example: the hamstring. Do you feel like you constantly have to stretch your hamstring? Why does your HS always feel tight? Is it because your glutes are weak and HS are overcompensating? Are you in an anterior pelvic tilt and those HS are constantly being tugged on??

Static stretching isn’t always the answer to feel better but if you do:
Gentle hold,30-60 sec
No bouncing
Perform after you are warmed up

The perineum is the area between the opening of the va**na and the anus.

Pregnancy: Performing perineum massage during pregnancy starting at 34-35 weeks can help soften the va**nal opening in preparation for child birth.  Research suggests that this can help reduce the degree of tearing in this area during child birth.  It also helps reduce postpartum perineal pain.

Postpartum:  If you had a tear during labor it is important to treat that to prevent excessive scar tissue formation. Perform once the scar is healed (usually 6 weeks postpartum) to improve mobility of the scar and surrounding tissue and help reduce pain, and painful in*******se.

True or False? The pelvic floor has to be strong to push the baby out.

False!

Your uterus pushes the baby out!

The pelvic floor has to be able to relax and lengthen to make room for the baby to come out.

Having a strong pelvic floor during pregnancy is important for other reasons but it also needs to relax and lengthen for childbirth.

See a pelvic floor PT and learn how to relax your pelvic floor for birth.
