I had the opportunity to sit in on a Zoom talk with grief educator David Kessler, and this topic came up. I remember thinking, how very true this is. So many people get stuck right here, where grief traps them in a kind of emotional prison, making it hard to move forward.

Pain disguises itself as loyalty by whispering, “If I stop crying, they’ll be forgotten,” or “If I laugh again, it means I’ve moved on.” But that’s not true. Your love for them doesn’t live in your suffering—it lives in your memories, your growth, and the way you carry them forward.

So, when pain convinces you that staying broken honors them, remember this: your healing doesn’t erase their memory; it honors their love by allowing you to keep living.

Standing next to my sister Tammie’s cutout, I can’t help but remember the surreal night when she was lying in repose at City Hall. To see her there, so loved, so honored, yet knowing we would bury her the very next day, was almost too much to process. This picture captures the strangeness of grief — holding on and letting go at the same time.
