💕Life Lessons with Lily: Catastrophe Thinking💕
Anyone else’s kiddo said in the morning my tummy hurts, I can’t go to school or my eye hurts and I can’t get up today???
Yesterday as we were driving to school Lily said her eye hurt and I can’t go to school! If it’s hurting, then I will cry, have to go to the nurse and get picked up!
It went from bad to worse in 10 seconds as she described how awful she felt.
I knew her eye wasn’t really hurting….
What I also know is that at 5 years old, catastrophe thinking is real for her! Like so many of us humans, we can have one bad thing happen and then within 1 minute we have created the ultimate worst-case scenario in our heads. Anyone relate??
With clients, I remind them that our catastrophe thinking can be so destructive and dangerous because it feels real, creates fear, yet it’s not actually happening in tangible reality.
Awareness of this destructive thinking habit is the first step, then you can start to recognize when it’s happening and remind yourself that you’re heading in a dangerous direction with your thoughts. Many of us live in that catastrophic mindset and are missing out on really living and enjoying life.
If you often go to the worst case scenario, maybe it’s time to check your thought habits and ask yourself if it’s real or just fear. Then you can choose to respond in a much more positive and constructive way🙌🏼
