Keeping up with your child’s well visits is as important as ever. Meet Nash, 4, who recently had his checkup with his doctor at Providence Pediatrics, and learn why it’s so important to his dad to make sure Nash is continuing with his well child checks.

🍉 Why is it important that your child go to their checkups? It’s important to my wife and me that both of our children routinely see their doctor to make sure they are growing and developing as they should. It’s very important that our children learn healthy habits at an early age to benefit them as they grow. Our pediatrician always provides us with valuable information to keep our kids on the right track with their health.

🚗 What did your practice do to make you feel safe in a COVID-19 world? We were able to wait in our car and were notified once our exam room was ready to limit exposure to others. All office staff was wearing PPE and practicing safe procedures. Our provider even talked about how he was sanitizing not only the room, but any medical devices used during the exam to keep Nash safe.

We’re so glad Nash had a great checkup, and he’s growing healthy and strong!

As schools re-open to in-person learning, some children feel nervous about returning to school. We asked Dr. Gillian Regan, a pediatric psychologist at Levine Children’s, for tips about alleviating kids’ anxiety about COVID-19:

LISTEN: Listen to your kids’ concerns so that they feel understood. By remaining calm and reassuring as you hear and discuss their fears, you can model a calm reaction for them to follow.

EMPATHIZE: Validate your kids’ emotions without minimizing their fears. Tell them that you understand that it’s a hard situation, but that you, their teachers and their classmates will be there to help them cope.

TAKE ACTION: What actions can your kids take to help them feel more secure? Review CDC guidelines about masks, social distancing and hand washing to find steps that you and your kids can take to feel more control over their safety.

⚠️ An important message from our pediatric emergency department ⚠️

Nationally, almost two kids a week die from a gun-related injury, and most occur as an accident in a family member’s home. In an effort to prevent injuries of this kind, our Levine Children’s pediatric emergency department has partnered with Safe Kids to provide families with gun locks and firearm safety information.

Monica Watts, RN, Levine Children’s pediatric emergency department nurse manager says, “As the only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, our team takes care of children who are involved in any type of traumatic event. Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in unintentional firearm injuries in children. It’s our ongoing goal to protect the young members of society, and we will do so by continuing to educate and raise awareness on this important matter."

To help prevent gun-related accidents, it’s imperative to make sure all fi****ms are stored safely. Our pediatric emergency department recommends making sure the gun is 1) separate from ammunition 2) unloaded 3) locked up with the keys and/or combination out of reach to children. It’s also important to ask if there’s a gun in any home where your children play or spend time.

Help us keep our children safe by following these important tips.

Like many of our providers, NP Leah Fitch has now gotten both doses of her COVID vaccine! She didn’t hesitate to get her vaccine to protect herself, her family, and her patients! As an added bonus, Leah is a breastfeeding mom, so her 4 month-old will likely benefit from her antibodies as well. 💉
