18 years ago, Tamron was told she had 18 months to live. She went in for what she thought was a routine surgery—only to wake up with a diagnosis so rare, most doctors never see it in their careers.

At just 21, Tamron’s world was turned upside down when a pregnancy ultrasound revealed what was believed to be a fibroid. But after surgery, she learned she had peritoneal mesothelioma—a rare, aggressive cancer that affects only about 300 people a year in the U.S. and is even rarer in women. She was told there was no hope but refused to give up.

She sought out a second opinion, and her search for answers led her to Dr. Ed Levine at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, a nationally recognized expert in HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) surgery. Tamron says Dr. Levine’s confidence re-ignited her will to live. “He told me I was in good hands, that I’d caught the tumor early and was a good candidate for treatment. After all the doom and gloom, my fire was just a flicker. Dr. Levine was a torch. He relit my flame,” she says.

Today, Tamron is not only a survivor—she’s a passionate advocate, sharing her journey to empower others facing cancer. Her story reminds us all: never underestimate the power of perseverance, community, and compassionate care.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a common and often severe side effect of cancer treatment, but a recent breakthrough could lead to therapies that prevent this painful condition.

Researchers have uncovered how a stress sensor in immune cells drives nerve damage during chemotherapy, and they found a way to block it in preclinical models.

A new trial is shedding light on how a direct-to-patient digital health program, mPATH‑Lung, is making strides in lung cancer prevention.

“Our study shows that reaching patients directly with digital tools can help overcome barriers to lung cancer screening and potentially save lives,” said David P. Miller, professor of implementation science in the Division of Public Health Sciences. “By empowering individuals with information and easy access to screening, we can make a real difference in early detection of lung cancer.”
