This Black History Month, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and lasting impact of Black leaders in health care — including pioneers in ophthalmology and optometry who helped shape the field we know today.

We honor trailblazers like Patricia Bath, the first Black woman physician to receive a medical patent for her groundbreaking laser cataract treatment, and David K. McDonogh, one of the first formally trained Black ophthalmologists in the United States.

Their dedication opened doors and expanded access to vision care for countless communities.

👁️ FACTS ABOUT CATARACTS

1️⃣ Cataracts happen when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, causing blurry or dim vision.
2️⃣ They develop gradually and are most common in people over 60.
3️⃣ Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide — but they are treatable.
4️⃣ Symptoms may include glare from lights, faded colors, double vision in one eye, and difficulty seeing at night.
5️⃣ Cataracts can affect one or both eyes, but they do not spread from eye to eye.
6️⃣ Surgery is the only effective treatment — and it’s one of the safest, most common procedures performed today.
