Treecycle America Certified Urban Forestry & Local Wood Marketplace The story begins with an 18 year veteran in the wood industry who saw much waste of wood through a career.

One day on a sales call he met a man with an unusual project. In that cabinet shop that day I met a man who was making a coffin for himself from a tree he planted as a boy, he was 76 at the time. I could not believe it. Since my specialty at the time was a focus on Wood Finish and Finishing systems for woodworkers and wood manufactures I offered to help finish his project with lacquers when he was

done building it just because I was so amazed at the idea of what he did. That day I thought of Treecycle America. I lived in Charlotte, the tree city of the south. I saw a huge amount of trees wasted after Urban Removal, just thrown in the dump and still being done. This is 40,000 to 80,000 lbs per day!!!! This information was gathered from local respectable Tree Care businesses that I poled, not to mention the 50 that I didn't. My goal was to create a managed forest in the Urban Forest. This means to think about how we plant, care and remove our city trees. Then we must have a consuming network to use the trees, mills and woodworkers, in a way we return a higher rate per ton of wood back to the economic engine of any city. We have all the folks, I just wanted to connect them. Secondly, create a Certification of this process with high ethical values. This is important for the future of the health of the Urban Canopy. We don't want trees coming down, we just want to utilize them when they do. We are doing this nation wide, and hopefully in Canada. The thing is in the north, wood isn't waste because of its stored solar energy, BTU's. This process of using has to be parlayed with the planting world. We work with developers, city planners, urban foresters, and non-profit planter to push a more Native Species mix of trees trying to limit ornamentals and non-natives. Other than a few cases of blight and disease a strong forest is one that comes but naturally. Our Urban Forest is no different. Lastly, our Chain of Custody. We have every trees that goes through our system of Certified Treecycle members must maintain and be audited to keep the Chain of Custody. We want to be able to verify wood and Local goods that were made in this way for many reasons. The main reason is to hold the high standards for Care, removal, use and replanting so we have a truly sustainable program

We would like to share that there is a new tree debris yard opening. We have worked long and hard on getting this started. We will be offering free disposal of most of the log debris that normally gets chipped up or tossed away. Ask your tree service to consider upcycing the wood they remove. All of this wood gets diverted to another use weather that is firewood, charcoal or lumber. It seems there are plenty of woodchips from all of the Urban Tree wood debris. We hope to put it to highest and best use which will turn into products that will stay and be used locally.

We have some good news! It has been years of work to get to this point. We are ready to start upcycling more local tree debris, now considered waste, to make more local products. There is a new firewood company starting up. Do you know where most firewood comes from? Look into it. Lowe’s and Home Depot have firewood from Eastern Europe. Many company here and abroad make firewood. Most (99%) pay for logs from loggers. We are not saying they are wrong. We just believe in another way, the future way. Use the resource around you first. Keep an eye out for and division of for firewood Upcycle from local waste trees. @ Charlotte, North Carolina

Plant a tree, today. If you can not, plant one tomorrow. It is not up the “them” and it is not going to be “their” fault when all the trees are gone. It is up to us all. Volunteer with a local .ORG like Trees Charlotte to get as many trees in the ground as possible. Take your kids or grandkids and nephews and nieces on walks on the greenway. Feel the difference when you are within the trees as opposed to when only surrounded by concrete. All things that make positive change in the world are “crazy” or dumb” when they are first introduced as compared to the Status Quo of the day.

What a great day it was this past Saturday at Squirrel Park in Mathews. They had an annual Earth Day event with many great vendors.

It was neat to see the CWA (Charlotte Woodworkers Assoc) building bird houses with kids. This was wood donated by Carolina Urban Lumber, who only upcycles local waste trees for its products. Now not only the wood gets second life, a bird gets house, a child gets and experience and a community gets created.

This was a great sight to see for us!!

Thank You!

Lots of White Oak boards. This wood came off the Charlotte Latin School property for their expansion. They will have the interior space up-fitted with this wood in the new building. Thanks to the folks at Little Architecture in Charlotte NC for having the vision.

Can you imagine a time when we used the resource in front of us? I can. We want to make it normal again.

This Willow Oak from the Federal Court House on Trade St in Charlotte , Tree ID 301, has a new use.

Think “Living Usefulness “ and “Material Usefulness”. This will be a Conference Table a few miles away from where it grew.

Total Miles Traveled from Birth to Death to Next Life, 12 miles

Davey Tree and Carolina Urban Lumber made this full circle happen.
