Hoos for Memory is an Alzheimer’s awareness organization at the University of Virginia. Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease affecting over five million people and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Hoos for Memory’s mission is to support Alzheimer’s research and awareness at the local level through fundraisers and volunteering, and at the national level with participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The club works with the Alzheimer’s Association, the nation’s largest non-profit organization leading the way in Alzheimer’s research, support, and care. Every year, Hoos for Memory hosts “Munching for Memory,” a hotdog eating contest for university students that has for the past four years successfully raised funds for research here at UVA. Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.
