Despite the name, it’s not as morbid as it sounds. It’s a Swedish practice of slowly decluttering your belongings as you get older so your loved ones aren’t left with the emotional and physical task of sorting through everything after you’re gone.
It’s really about being thoughtful, keeping what matters, sharing the stories behind meaningful items, and letting go of what you no longer need. Many people find it brings a sense of peace and clarity, not just to their homes, but to their relationships too.

For most of human history, families cared for their own dead at home. They washed the body, kept vigil, and said goodbye in their own time.
That option still exists.
