Chattanooga, Tennessee - $1,499,000 - 6 beds, 9 baths - 9,500 sq ft - 1962

This mansion is a beautiful bit of MCM tucked within other structures. The MCM portion (probably a normal-sized house when it was built in the 60s) is quite gorgeous. The listing says it was designed by Chattanoogan architectural firm Hunt-Caton & Associates. That seems a bit odd since that firm was mainly a commercial design firm. It’s possible that one of the draftsmen who worked there was moonlighting on the side and helped design the original house. Anyway, lots of neat detailed shots and additional photos in the listing: https://bit.ly/4ko2gy8

Sad to share that this mid-century gem, a Hotpoint Living-Conditioned House designed by Bruce McCarty, has been quietly sold off-market to what appears to be a commercial developer. Its future is uncertain, and the quiet nature of the sale raises real concerns about the loss of another piece of our mid-century architectural heritage. 😢 Attached is a 2016 post from about this home.

Mosheim, Tennessee - $265,000 - 3 beds, 3 baths - 1,802 sq ft - 1972

Still on that lade modern train. I don’t even know what to say about this house. It looks like it was custom built, the layout is wild, the home is mostly untouched. There’s carpet and wallpaper everywhere...man. Just, click through the photos. Lots more in the listing: https://bit.ly/4jc1yUw

Johson City, Tennessee - $599,900 - 3 beds, 3 baths - 6,880 sq ft - 1970

Can’t get off my late modern kick. Plus, this massive house in Johnson City is UNTOUCHED. S**g carpet everywhere (yes, even in the bathroom), beautiful wood everywhere you look, skylights, sloping rooflines, it’s really awesome. This is the kind of thing you’ve gotta jump on. Louisville, Tennessee - $1,420,000 - 3 beds, 3 baths - 2,902 sq ft - 1972

Still in a late modern phase, but why not? This house used to be MCMish but definitely has felt the touch of a modern remodeler. It’s not bad though, just not original. The views are stellar but here’s a plus: for all the true Cormac McCarthy fans, this house is just down the road from the cabin he built for himself. Memphis, Tennessee - $1,095,000 - 5 beds, 4 baths - 4,817 sq ft - 1974

We’re a little past MCM, and sort of in the late modern era, but this is quite a house. Designed by Memphis architect Robert Lee Browne as his own personal residence, the central atrium is really a sight to behold. The house looks like it’s been well taken care of / refurbished, even if it is a bit Pottery Barn-y. Lots more pictures in the listing: https://bit.ly/3BRz3uv

Kinsport, Tennessee - $287,000 - 3 beds, 2 baths - 2,203 sq ft - 1958

Kingsport is wild. There’s a small cadre of MCM architects who move up there in the 50s/60s and establish practices, so there’s all sorts of gems floating around. This house has had some less-than-sensitive alterations over the years (I’m not sure the parque floors are original) but there’s a few things to love. The glass in the living room is amazing. The living room room has been mostly left alone. There’s a unique wood feature that helps create an entryway, never seen anything like that. This custom fireplace is wild. See for yourself. Knoxville, Tennessee - $1,690,000 - 4 beds, 3 baths - 2,212 sq ft - 1955

A very interesting listing, this. It looks to be a beautiful midcentury modern house, built overlooking the river (hence the price). Maybe designed by an architect? Seems pretty stylish for a layman. The original owner was a doctor in the 1950s so he had the money to hire a designer. From the pictures and the listing details, it seems like the sellers attempted a remodel, got into it, and decided it wasn’t worth the time/money. They do seem interested, however, in having someone buy it who is willing to remodel it and keep it’s MCM bones and look/feel in tact. Question is, is anyone up to the task? Nashville, Tennessee - $1,500,000 - 5 beds, 5 baths - 4,266 sq ft - 1960

Two Draper-designed houses in one month? Why not. This house was designed by notable Nashville architect R. Bruce Draper for Alan Bubis (the founder of Spar Records, https://bit.ly/3zKJ4Im ) According to the article on the house, Draper studied at Taliesin and tried to bring some of the Frank Lloyd Wright materiality to the house (redwood and brick, especially). The house is wild looking though. Lots of levels. Much of it untouched by modernity. Lots more photos in the listing: https://bit.ly/465uyH8

Old Hickory, Tennessee - $1,200,000 - 3 beds, 2.5 baths - 3,298 sq ft - 1970

I discovered this home by architect Robinson Neil Bass many years ago while exploring and mapping mid century architecture in Middle TN. I have loved it from afar ever since! It just hit the market and fortunately they retained much of its mid century charm in the renovation. Many more photos in the listing: https://bit.ly/4cpNPWg From the listing: Truly one-of-a-kind mid-century modern home. Designed by Architect Robinson Neil Bass, known for historically significant preservation & other notable Nashville mid-century architecture. His public designs include the Cheekwood Botanic Hall.
