It’s an adult’s job to help them regulate.
•••
Things that I hear a lot from adults lately:
ā€œWhy can’t they just transition(move from A-B)?ā€
ā€œIt’s not that hardā€
ā€œThey were fine yesterday.ā€
•••
Let’s zoom out. Some kids are asked to code-switch all. day. long.
•••
PT.
OT.
Speech.
Counseling.
Classroom teacher.
Music teacher.
Art teacher.
Different adults.
Lunchroom.
Bus driver.
Different expectations in every setting.
Different setups in each environment.

AND THATS JUST BETWEEN 8:00am and 3:00pm.

We would NEVER expect most children to tolerate that many changes, interruptions, and shifts in expectations without support. Heck- we as adults struggle with those types of demands.

YET we expect our kids (esp kids with disabilities- the very kids whose nervous systems are likely working overtime )to do it seamlessly. And while ā€œcalmā€ 🤢

Kids- especially kids with needs- are in cognitive overload. They are in nervous system fatigue. Their cup hath runneth over!!!!

So before we demand kids to be calm- consider what expectations they are facing (visibly or invisibly) and…
•create predictable routines & consistency
•offer opportunities for choice & autonomy (kids want to exercise what little control they have in this adult-led world)
•build safety & build relationships
•move the body —> support the nervous system

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do…
is zoom out & adjust our expectationsā¤ļø

Hi there to friends old & new šŸ‘‹

If you’re new here, I’m Jenna- OT, boy mom x4, and the founder behind Well & Wild Child šŸ¤

Lately I’ve been feeling extra grounded in the things that matter most to me:
🌿 kids being kids
🌿 outdoor play
🌿 supporting nervous systems, both children & parents
🌿 helping parents feel less overwhelmed & more confident
🌿 and creating spaces where kids are understood, supported & feel successful

I believe for children that movement matters, play is powerful, & nature is the ultimate tool for regulation, connection & growth. I’m also passionate about supporting parents in their journeyšŸ¤

Most days you’ll find me outside, walking, writing, or dreaming up ways to help kids grow strong, capable, and connected with LESS pressure and MORE play. Likely with a coffee in hand or dancing it out to music of all genres though I’m sucker for some 90s-2000s throwbacks!🤪

If you’re here for thoughtful parenting, outdoor OT, nervous system support, or just a slower, more intentional approach to childhood… welcome to the Well & Wild Child family! I’m really so very glad you’re here! šŸ’š

šŸ‘€šŸŒæParents- ever wonder what I see during outdoor sessions?
I see a whole lot of growing from the simplest of activities.

I see…
•Problem solving – Which size stick works? Why did that fall?
•Planning & sequencing – Collecting sticks, thinking of a structure, placing them in order…
•Visual-motor skills – Hands and eyes working together
•Visual perceptual skills – Size of sticks, just right shape, tweaking for balance, arranging the orientation
•Perseverance– Staying with the task!
•Frustration tolerance – It fell… try again!
•Cause & effect – If I do this, then that happens
•and my favorite the feeling of PRIDE – ā€œI did it!ā€

I truly believe the way we ā€œundo thisā€ is by reorganizing/reframing/reapproaching the way we support kids.

I believe kids NEED:
*LESS stimulation
*MORE unstructured time to be a kid (yes this means letting go of the reins a bit for parents & goes for preteens & teens too)
*MORE movement
&& of course
*MORE quality outdoor time

šŸ¤I believe these things to be foundational- essential- of utmost importance to help kids become strong, confident, competent & capable individuals. This is the why behind everything Well & Wild Child stands for.

This used to make me SO annoyed.
You’re FINALLY ready to join in & play with your child until…

You build a fort with them- they tear it down. šŸ˜‘
You click together magnetic tiles- they run them over with a toy truck. šŸ˜‘
You build a snowman they tip it and smash it. 😔

But now I look at their play with a different lens & I understand that this construct something-destroy something is all just part of their play and development!

✨They aren’t ruining the play, they’re learning through it!✨(and they aren’t being bad!)
They are being curious about how the world works.
They are problem-solving- how do I make it stronger next time?
They are understanding cause and effect!

✨Parents try this:
Pause & check- is my child dysregulated? Is this play safe (always check the environment)
If it’s safe & playful, let it fall, get knocked over, etc. encourage them to rebuild /add on/ take away/ etc.

Then ditch them!!

I mean the rules - not the kidšŸ™ƒ
Follow their lead- encourage your child to make their own rules and take charge of their play.
I love to use items or toys that have multiple purposes. Sometimes you can use parts of your games to invent new ones...

Here’s a few ideas to try at home!
šŸŽ² dice: roll for jumps, turns, animal walks, or silly voices
šŸŒ€ spinner board: choose actions, colors, emotions, movements
🧱 jenga blocks: build, knock down, write actions on them, create roadways
ā™ ļøcards: match, sort, invent meanings

What games/items do you have around the house that has multiple uses? Share below!šŸ‘‡

When kids don’t get outside, parents might start noticing…
• emotions that feel bigger, bigger meltdowns
• kids who are constantly on the move
• trouble winding down, restlessness
•less frustration tolerance for tough stuff
• more dependence on screens
•decreased imagination & play skills
•less confidence with taking risks & problem-solving

And all that can leave parents feeling burned out, stuck, or unsure how to actually support their kids!

🌲 Outdoor OT can help meet those needs.

We use nature, play, and movement to support:
–regulation
–attention, problem solving
–social skills
–confidence & emotional skills
-strength & coordination
-build curiosity & imagination

Tools create new & fun opportunities and are something kids don’t usually have access to!

When kids use real tools in nature, they’re building:
🧠 build brain–body connection like fine motor skills, hand strength, and motor planning and more
šŸ’Ŗ confidence & competence by learning to safely use real tools, and practicing taking risks. That confidence carries into school, play, and daily life.
šŸ›  using tools helps build patience, persistence, and stretches frustration tolerance!

*Tools aren’t just saws, knives, hammers… they can also be real binoculars, magnifying glasses, and other equipment that kids don’t typically get to use!

What types of tools do your kids love using at home? Drop it in the comments!šŸ› ļøšŸŖš
