🌿Hello there! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing in NJ.

🌿 I am passionate about helping clients find alternatives to unhelpful patterns and find some relief from the pain of the past.

There is so much pressure for summertime to be fun. And when we aren’t having fun, it can bring up feelings of inadequacy. The truth is, this is a very common experience thanks to our societal expectations being heavily influenced by social media.

Although many people notice an improvement their mental health during the summer months, some are prone to seasonal depression during the summer. Summer can also be a particularly vulnerable time for distress around body image and eating disorder urges. All of this can impact your ability to feel enjoyment and desire to seek enjoyment.

If you are struggling with any of the above, you are not alone in feeling this way. Let someone know and consider starting therapy.

Here are 3 of the many ways that comparisons steal our joy 👇🏼
☁️ Comparisons make us feel like we are not good enough. We tend to compare the worst things about our lives to the best things about the lives of those we compare ourselves with. There is no end to the comparisons we can make - so the best option is to get off the hamster wheel altogether.
☁️ Comparisons often lead to self-criticism, which can cause us to feel anxious and depressed. We might think that if we criticize ourselves, it will motivate us to change or do better. But more often than not, it can leave us feeling helpless, stuck and unmotivated.
☁️ Comparisons lead to envy and envy is a tricky emotion because oftentimes we feel wrong (shame) for feeling envy. When we ignore or get stuck in envy, it can be corrosive to our relationships because doing so leads to resenting and disliking those we feel envious of. If we listened to ourselves and asked “what is this emotion telling me about my dreams and desires?” (instead of comparing ourselves, feeling envy and feeling wrong) - then we would be heading in the direction of making our lives better (rather than making ourselves feel miserable).

It’s easy to underestimate how much feeling happiness, joy and moments of loving life can positively impact our mental health.

Not only does it feel *amazing* in the moment, it can also be a buffer for when we have more challenging or painful moments afterwards.

For folks who struggle with ongoing depression and anxiety, it can feel scary to feel happiness - sometimes the fear is “if I allow myself to feel this, then it’s going to feel so much worse when I feel bad again”.

The 🔑 is mindfulness. First, we need to be paying attention to the moments of beauty, love and connection in our lives in order to feel joy. Then, we need to remember that although the feelings of joy and happiness are fleeting, so are more challenging emotions. No feeling is final. And there are always beautiful moments ahead when we look for them.

I know, I know, easier said than done. Therapy is an excellent tool for increasing our ability to feel all of the emotions.
