Most people just call me Coach Gianni, but my full name is Gianni Zayas a Cuban born ballplayer who had the honor of being drafted by two Major League Baseball organizations: the Chicago Cubs (2014) and the Seattle Mariners (2015).
I started as a raw, underwhelming pitcher out of North Bergen High School, and through hard work and faith, I earned my way to North Carolina State, then Seminole State in Florida, and finally Florida International University. I went on to play a season with the Seattle Mariners organization and later became a professional All-Star in 2017 with the Sussex County Miners right here in New Jersey.
I was born in Cuba, came to the U.S. with my family, and even though I lost part of my right thumb when I was a baby, I never let it stop me from chasing baseball or life.
Now, as a Physical Education teacher at North Bergen Junior High School, I’m focused on giving young players the same opportunity I had and helping them navigate the college recruiting process with real insight and support.
Whether it’s on the mound or on the dance floor (yes, I love salsa), I believe in bringing passion, energy, and purpose to everything I do. My goal is simple: to help the next generation of ballplayers reach their potential and have fun doing it.
