Tapas is a personal practice, it’s one of the five niyamas, or moral codes of conduct.

It refers to your inner fire — both the literal heat you build in a vigorous vinyasa practice and the inner fire of drive, passion, and courage. It's the practice of austerity, moving away choosing complacency, doing what’s easiest, and procrastination. Being discipline with our decisions is the only way to make a change. Set a goal, practice a routine, stick to a schedule, change habits, and say no to the voice inside your head that doesn't care about your best interest.

Practice strength to power and challenge yourself. Burn away negative thought patterns and habits. Start small and keep moving forward. Do it for you. It's all worth it.

I'm overwhelmed by the amount of violence humans are capable of. We live in a world where genocide and war are happening every day. We live in a country where 4 mass shootings happened in one weekend. I live in a city where last year there were over 800 homicides.

Ahimsa translates to non violence in Sanskrit. Ahimsa is part of the first limb of yoga known as Yama. Yama can be understood as civil codes of conduct.

Ahimsa applies to delivering harm by physical action (kayaka), expression or words (vācaka), and thoughts (manasika).

Have you ever had your feelings hurt by the words and/or tone that someone has used to communicate? The way we phrase our opinions, feedback, or emotions can trigger a spiral of hurt and toxicity.

Have you ever been frustrated and wished something bad upon someone? How often do you make negative statements? Do you use the word “hate”? When was the last time you smiled and said one thing, only to turn around and say or do the opposite?

It’s only natural to assume others around us are doing the same thing. That’s when the the power couple shows up; DEFENSIVE and INSECURITY . These are relationship ruiners and can have a lasting impact on the people in our lives.

Stop negative self-talk. Stop with offensive comments/jokes. Tune into the tone of your voice, and your choice of words.

Take a minute to consider if it's necessary, how it will be perceived, and what might be a consequence if it's hurtful.

Playing around with acro yoga after Thursday night’s Vin Yang yoga practice in the park. We soaked up the Moon’s radiance while we submerged ourselves in the blossoms of Spring.

Everything works out in it's own time.
What has control if not yourself? According to the yoga sutras and many spiritual texts, Divine Consciousness is the impelling force in our lives. In the Yoga Sutras, this force is called Ishvara. It signifies the ultimate consciousness that is inclusive of everything and limited to nothing.

If I allowed my life to be in the hands of that which is unlimited possibility and all-powerful, then the sky isn’t even the limit. Possibilities aren’t subject to just what we can imagine. Infinite ways of dealing with life’s challenges are available, that we can’t conceive of with our limited thoughts. If anything can bring us the energy, inspiration, and tools to heal and change our lives, this infinite force is it.

Yoga Limb 2 of 8 :: Niyama

Niyama :: Things to consider on a personal level.

Niyama 5 of 5 :: Ishvarapranidhana (ईश्वरप्रणिधान)

Ish-vara-prani-d-hana (ईश्वरप्रणिधान) :: Surrender to [The Universe / God / Reality] and let go of allowing expectations to control your emotions. Do your best to be your most authentic self and fully live YOUR life. Remember that you have a choice to do away with worrisome, stressful, and negative thoughts. We like to control every action and outcome which results in disappointment when things don't go "right". Yes- it can be hard and scary to remind yourself that only our ultimate reality has control of what's next. Use vulnerability and courage to learn not only your boundaries, but how to navigate through difficult situations without getting hung-up on the parts that you didn't, and don't have control of. Show yourself what you're made of, your truth in this moment. Make it about the relationship between you and The Universe. Do your best right now. Realize that it's out of your hands, and look forward to the bounties of your future. This is what it means to practice Ish-vara-prani-d-hana. Surrender and sense the relief and empowerment in your daily life.

We helped in our community. We made a positive impact for our planet. We recharged in the sun, and grounded ourselves in the grass. We flowed with the breeze, and the rhythm of our breath. We showed up for each other. We shared something with someone new. We let go. We practiced yoga.
