Hi Doulas!

Tia Wente, Bridget Lira and I are hosting a "New Doula Skills Night" to practice the hands-on aspect of doula support with new doulas in our area. With the popularity of online doula training we are finding a lot of new doulas are wishing for more hands-on practice as they get started in this career.

Join us for a fun night of collaboration, networking, and hands-on practice. Light refreshments will be provided.
We plan to cover positioning, pressure points, touch, physical support, and more.
Registration will be $15 per doula and all proceeds will be donated to a local doula whose family is experiencing medical hardship.

To Register, please email chibirthandbaby@gmail.com with your name and contact information. You will receive a confirmation email with payment instructions.
This workshop will be held at the Chicagoland Birth & Baby office at 657 E Gold Rd St 301 in Arlington Heights. We look forward to a great turnout :-)

If you can't join but still want to help a fellow doula, please check out their GoFundMe

After my baby was born, there were stretches of time at the hospital where my son would snooze in his bassinet, tightly swaddled and looking very cute.

⁣I'd stand over him, taking a million photos and marveling at the fact that an entire human being had just emerged from my body.

⁣Before giving birth, I had learned that I should hold my baby in skin-to-skin contact. And I did, a number of times. But here's what I didn't know, but I wish I did.

⁣I didn't understand *why* skin to skin contact is so important.

⁣I wasn't aware that when you hold your baby skin to skin, they chest/breastfeed more often. And when your baby feeds more often, everything else falls into place.

⁣⚪your baby gains weight faster
⚪your body makes milk faster
⚪you increase your overall milk supply
⚪you can avoid problems like engorgement, plugged ducts, and mastitis

⁣Mostly, I didn't understand that skin to skin wasn't a "box" to tick off, but a way of life in the weeks after birth.

⁣I didn't understand that any time I wasn't sleeping, eating, or showering, my baby should ideally be unswaddled and undressed (diaper is fine) against my chest, with a blanket over us but nothing between us.

⁣I didn't understand that staring at my baby swaddled in his bassinet was a lost opportunity to get that all-important skin-to-skin time in.

⁣📸 And skin to skin photos? Even more magical than those bassinet shots.

Hi, I'm back!

I took a break from social media while we had a super jammed pack summer. Since my last post, I've had 27 births, 10 placenta encapsulations, and have made countless precious summer memories with my kids.

I look foward to reintroducing myself and sharing inspiring and helpful content for birthing moms. If you're seeing this, I'm glad you're here and thanks for sticking around during my hiatus. ❤️

Your birth environment sets the stage for or****ic or ecstatic or supernatural or euphoric birth—What we call it doesn’t matter, but we know it when we experience it! ✨

The birth environment includes the physical space that surrounds us, the people who are supporting us, and the external sensory stimuli we are exposed to (lights, sound, touch, texture).✨

An optimal birth environment is, quiet, dark, calm, relaxing & low stress with only those people we deeply trust and feel safe within their presence. External stimuli is kept minimal and only includes that which we welcome. ✨

In this environment, our bodies innate birthing wisdom is able to most effectively activate. ✨

Here’s what’s involved :

✨Oxytocin – peak levels are necessary for optimal birth effectiveness. It also protects your baby when the uterus is very active & restricting blood flow to your baby.

✨Beta Endorphins – the natural opiates of labor that create a feeling of euphoria. It’s a part of our innate pain-relieving system.

✨Catecholamines/stress hormones – these can slow, stop or stall your labor when the mother feels fear or stress. But in the final stage, these are helpful, allowing the fetal ejection reflex (natural expulsive reflex) to occur, giving mother an extra surge in energy. This is why you might shiver right after birth, as the stress hormones subside.

✨Prolactin –gives mothers a heightened sense of protective instinct, and makes us acutely aware of sound and movement around our babies.

With the help of nature’s hormones, an ecstatic, or****ic, euphoric, supernatural birth is absolutely possible! ✨💫✨💫✨💫✨

" Language is powerful. If your provider says “let”, they’re forgetting who’s in charge. If you don’t correct them on the spot, then you’re forgetting, too. Nothing happens without your consent - no one can induce you without your consent; no one can give you an IV in labor if you don’t consent; no one can give you a vaginal exam if you don’t consent. Those rights exist to protect you and we never want to forego our rights.

This isn’t to say whether to get the IV, the induction, the vaginal exam; it’s to say own your decision, because it’s only yours to make.

Having a satisfying birth is greatly correlated to the degree of responsibility we are willing to take.

So take it.

Your body. Your baby. Your birth. Your life. "

The average OBGYN spends 13 to 16 minutes with a family at each visit. That is less than 2 and a half hours during an ENTIRE PREGNANCY.

We spend on average over 4 hours in your home dedicated to walking you through your birth options, building a birth plan, showing you comfort measures and labor positions, and answering all of your pressing questions. This is IN ADDITION to being available for your questions or concerns via text/call/email 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the moment you hire your birth support specialist and spending on average 10 to 24 continuous hours providing in-person, hands-on labor support.

Our goal is to provide families with the best start by ensuring they have well supported pregnancies, ample time to ask questions and get evidence based information, have guidance in finding a provider that aligns with their preferences, and enter parenthood feeling confident and positive about the weeks to come.

Get support in pregnancy, birth, lactation, newborn care, postpartum planning, and more!

I had the privilege of being a part of so many births this year and I'm truly grateful for every family that has let me work with them.

I also want to give a huge shout out and thank you to my partner who has been my sounding board, support and back up and without which this wouldn't have been possible. Also, thank you to , , , , and many others who have supported me in one way or another this year.

Here's to an amazing 2023 🎉🥂

Snow storms bring all the babies! ❄️☃️
My doula partner and I happened to be at the Burr Ridge Birth Center at the same time today for two different moms. The roads were dicey and it was -37 overnight but everyone made it safely. 💕

OK: science post!

It can be hard to explain this simply, but basically there is an ingredient in breastmilk called FIL. (Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation. Inhibitor means it inhibits, stops or discourages lactation)

As the breast fills up with milk, FIL gets bossy AF and tells the milk production to slow down.
So the fuller your b**b, the SLOWER milk is being made.

ALSO, fat kind of clings to your milk ducts, so when your breast feels as flat as a pancake after 2 hours of cluster feeding and your baby is pulling on and off like they haven't eaten for weeks they are actually pulling out that really high fat milk. So it is fine and beneficial even if they aren't getting really high volumes of it.

THEN because the breast is really soft and FIL isn't really hanging around at this point, the breast speeds up production so you have lots more milk later.

Clever isn't it?
