The upsides to getting a cold and beginnings of a sinus infection on vacation are that I have the perfect excuse to stay put and read and I have the most gorgeous backdrop and weather anyone could wish for to do it.

I highly recommend this one. It’s a captivating story born out of the AIDS crisis in 1980’s Chicago about relationships forged through love and loss, triumph and tragedy. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll learn more about an important part of our history and most likely about yourself.

What did I learn? For one: relationships are complicated. Sometimes we are hurt and sometimes we hurt others. That doesn’t mean we are doing them wrong or that we are broken. It just means we are humans, we are all doing the best we can, and ultimately it’s worth the pain we will endure to be vulnerable and live and love with our whole hearts.

Finished How to Do Nothing on the beach in San Juan, which seems pretty apropos. 🤓 It’s about the attention economy in which we live, where what is bought and sold (and therefore manipulated and controlled) are parcels of our attention. It’s not so much a screed against the economy as it is a philosophical examination of it and a how-to manual for taking back the agency of our attention. This gives us the option of moving away from the idea of “productivity” being the holy grail and toward the space where we can take time to think deeply, be creative, and “do nothing.” She’s a professor and writes like one, but if you don’t mind that, I highly recommend. A great, thought provoking read.

This is a really great way to look at why we procrastinate. It can be a form of short term emotional regulation. As we recognize this and offer compassion to ourselves around what we are experiencing, it opens up different opportunities to cope with those feelings.

My habit of delaying to the last minute may have deeper roots than I’d realized

Although we share the same oppressors, white q***r folks must come to terms with the fact that they play a role in the harm experienced by their Black and Brown siblings.

During hard conversations, when I feel myself reaching for my favorite armor (perfectionism, anger, being the knower, trying to control, emotional intensity, getting critical), I try to remember that the antidote to armoring up is staying curious.

These are a few of my favorite questions and sentence starters.
