Low vitamin D status is something I see on labs in almost everyone I work with, even some getting sun or taking higher daily doses!
So why can vitamin D STILL be low when we’re doing the right things?
There are a few different reasons, but one that is gaining more and more attention is underlying viral loads that can block absorption of vitamin D.
We can have higher viral loads from chronic stress that decreases our immunity and reactivates old viruses like HH6 and EBV, or makes it hard to clear acute illnesses like we’re seeing with long c-v-i-d.
Because our vitamin D receptors get clogged up from those viral loads, we can’t absorb proper amounts, leaving our numbers lower than we need. A true double edged sword, as we need vitamin D to have a robust immune system!
How we can see this in labs:
Low vitamin D levels (below 70)
High neutrophils with low lymphocytes (ratio of 2.5-3)
High lymphocytes (above 42) with normal neutrophils
High monocytes (above 7)
Rosemary can be such a useful ally for this application! She’s gentle enough to be used by many, but very effective for assisting our immune system in clearing those viral loads and supporting our vitamin D levels as a wonderful side effect!
We can enjoy her infused in broths (my favorite, especially when not feeling well!), in tincture form, or in capsules. Potential side effects: better cognition, improved digestion and toasty hands and feet 🙈
The more I learn about rosemary (yes, the little old rosemary you can find at the grocery store!) the more I am in awe of her far, far reaching benefits!

My story in nutrition began as I struggled with health issues which started to impact my quality of life. Led astray by conventional medicine, I sought out guidance from a holistic health practitioner who drastically changed my perspective about healing and taught me how nutrition deeply influences our body’s function. I began to realize the connections between imbalances in our lifestyle and environment and imbalances in our bodies. Craving more knowledge, I quickly changed my educational path to suit my new passion: healing foods and health for the whole person. In search for an institution which supported my beliefs, I serendipitously stumbled upon a unique program at National University of Natural Medicine, who promoted an educational perspective about healing and nutrition in an alternative way compared to traditional Western medicine.
My education provided me with in-depth knowledge of the intricate workings of our physiology and how food, lifestyle and environmental inputs can impact the function of the body. Clinical and internship experiences exposed me to real people struggling with different diseases and ailments. Seeing firsthand how food can act medicinally opened my eyes to the innate healing power found in Nature. Aside from time in the clinic, I adored the culinary focus of my education. After learning about the medicinal properties of food, we spent time to establish a deep connection with and a respect for our food in the kitchen together. All of these experiences gave me the tools and preparation to best serve my clients and community to share this incredible and life-changing knowledge.
My journey through this institution positively changed my perspective about nutrition and food in ways I never dreamed. During this education, I uncovered an undeniable, firey passion for bringing a sort of gentleness, compassion and understanding to the profession of nutrition and health counseling through food relationship coaching, not yet fully recognized by the public or practiced in the conventional nutrition approach. This practices recognizes psychological, philosophical and societal influences at work which impact our food choice. Uncovering these aspects of our food story can be an incredibly important piece in bringing a fresh perspective to nutrition and health coaching.
My journey has been long and difficult at times, but the challenges continue to shape me into a more empathetic practitioner. I am excited and deeply humbled to be able to participate with others in their journey of health and life as a human, a life-long learner, coach and friend.
