Chicago Birth Workers of Color (ChiBiWoCo) is a grassroot collective of birth workers of color providing full spectrum services throughout the Chicagoland area. Born out of need, we work to support communities of color in their birthing and reproductive choices through our ancestral wisdom and birthright. We envision communities that are able to thrive, self-determine, and live autonomously, free from judgment, ridicule, and criminalization as it relates to their choices of parenting and birth.

Buenos dias loves. Can I ask where my Dupage and Kane county labor support people are?

Not sure if everyone has heard but some options for birthing families have shifted in Chicagoland!

I wanted to spread the word that midwives at PCC are taking clients and have been open for business. They catch babies at the PCC Birth Center in Berwyn as well as in the ABC room at West Suburban Hospital. They take serveral types of insurance as well as Medicaid and service a broad population.

Let’s make sure our families have options that are safe and accessible. No one should have to birth alone.

If you have questions or want to send clients over, email msommers@pccwellness.org

We know We don’t base friendship on gifts, but if you’ve ever felt grateful with us for anything, aaaanyyything we’ve done for you, here’s a great way to pay it forward:

Donate to IG account campaign to create the first BIPOC Birth Center in South Chicago. That will make all of us win and celebrated among the communities we love serving!

If you are a BIPOC Birthworker in Chicago you know we need this, you know how most Birth Centers in Chicago are white folks own and everywhere but South where most our Black and Latinx communities reside. And if you know what’s up…. You know what’s up!

The link is on her bio, here also if you feel like typing:

When it comes to birthing, there is still much for us to unlearn. Join us for a workshop on confronting anti-blackness and transphobia as birth workers and pregnant people. We will unpack language, some history, harmful assumptions, and more so that we can ensure better birth outcomes for everyone. Please bring something to write with, your questions, and anything that makes you feel grounded; tea and a snack, perhaps. We look forward to holding this space for you.

As full-spectrum Birthworkers/Doulas, we also help people seeking abortions with the logistical and emotional labor that it takes to physically get to and from their appointments. We do our best so that people who need an abortion can get one - in a fully comprehensive way!

Though the work itself is nothing new (people have been helping people get medical care forever), practical support as a specific practice IS relatively new in abortion access. The more restrictions that go into place, the more people have to travel - and the more they need people like me to help them.

This work is complicated, stressful, and rewarding and only really works in community. Until now there had not been a space by and for practical support organizations like mine to easily meet and collaborate with each other. In May, we attended the first-ever practical support summit where I got to meet my peers for the first time. It was exciting and uplifting. So many amazing people!
Now the organizers of the summit are officially launching Apiary (will add the link in the comments session), a national collective by and for practical support organizations. Apiary’s mission is to build community and centralize tools and information for practical support organizations so that we can work more effectively.
In order to ensure that Apiary can build the space we want to live in, they are running a seed funding campaign to cover the costs of the team and the launch.

Please consider donating and/or sharing widely to this necessary and valuable piece of the abortion access puzzle. You can also ask the amazing Midwest Access Coalition for more info.

It is just BEAUTIFUL!

Our Story

Chicago Birth Workers of Color (ChiBiWoCo) is a grassroot collective of birth workers of color providing full spectrum services throughout the Chicagoland area.

Born in 2015 around a table eating brunch this idea developed out reflecting on the need, we work to support communities of color in their birthing and reproductive choices through our ancestral wisdom and birthright.

We envision communities that are able to thrive, self-determine, and live autonomously, free from judgment, ridicule, and criminalization as it relates to their choices of parenting and birth.

Today many others march the march....
