Two Western Michigan University researchers have developed a device that uses pressure and heat – rather than tooled systems – to cut hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass, porcelain, semiconductors and stone for micromanufacturing and micromachining purposes. Story from MLive.com.

It is new technology they hope will drastically reduce the time and cost needed to make everything from semiconductors to optical mirrors.

An improved design for multiple-well microscope cells and an associated improved method of fabricating them have been devised.

Amazing for quantum mechanics. What a think tank over there at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory! This story is why Smaltec is interested in science and of course, micromachining and micro-edm.

For the first time, scientists have been able to watch electrons move in an atom's outer shell, in a breakthrough with major implications for our understanding of chemical processes.

The next time we're in California, we need to visit California Institute of Technology and learn about the exciting stuff they're doing! The Caltech Micromachining Laboratory's research interests include MEMS technology, microsensors, microactuators, microstructure, MEMS systems, and MEMS science.

The Caltech Micromachining Laboratory is associated jointly with the Department of Electrical Engineering in the Engineering and Applied Science Division at the California Institute of Technology.
