I thought a lot about whether or not I should say something.

I have been quiet the last couple of weeks.

Not because I do not have thoughts. Mostly because I kept telling myself it was safer to stay neutral.

Safer to keep things light.

But Minneapolis is not an abstract place to me.

Minneapolis was a place I called home for many years of my life.

And watching what has happened there lately has me at a loss for words.

How have we even gotten here?

Renée Good. Then Alex Pretti.

I keep thinking about how both of those sentences end the same way, and how quickly we are expected to move on.

When will it stop?

This is not ok and we cannot let this become our new normal.

I know people get nervous to post things like this.

I get it, I’m right there with you.

No one wants to feel exposed to the impending backlash.

But silence is not neutral.

Silence is how we start to accept things we should never accept.

As a doctor, I have seen what violence does after the news cycle ends. It does not just take one life. It fractures families and entire communities.

Everything I do at Nerdbugs comes back to one thing: treat people like people.

It seems so simple doesn’t it?

I don’t have the perfect answer. I just know that staying silent or looking away isn’t it.
