Good morning, blessed Sunday. I’m sure we all know the biblical creation story from Genesis. This has lead to many debates, over the centuries, as to the age of the earth. It states that God created the earth in 6 days and on the 7th He rested. On day 6 it says that God created humans.
One can wonder where do we fall in this story? It has been assumed that each day of creation is 24 hours and man’s fall into sin and everything since is post day 7, the day of rest. Where can we find clarity in this question. For this we need to look at the New Testament
The writer of the book oh Hebrews, in chapter 3, stated quite clearly that on our timeline, God has not entered his rest. What is Gods Rest? According to Genesis, God rested on day 7. That would place us still on day 6 or on the day that humans were created.
That may be hard to fathom, because it is different than what we have been taught. Could the writer of the Hebrews got it wrong or maybe we don’t understand what he was saying. Is there other supporting texts in the Bible?
For clarification, all we have to do is is look at what Jesus said. Jesus knows, he was there when it all took place.
Jesus often was criticized, by the Pharisees for healing people on the Sabbath, the celebration of the day of rest, day 7 of creation. It was against the law of the Jewish people, and considered a sin, because it is contrary to the 10 commandments to do work on the sabbath. They considered healing someone as work. This is because if someone did anything, even walked to far on the sabbath breaking this commandment. This is what had been handed down from the law of Moses.
In John 5 we read one of these interactions Jesus had with the Pharisees. This is just after Jesus healed th man at the pool of Bethesda, and told him to carry his mat, walking with something is a definite violation of the law and telling someone to violate the law is a sin.
What did Jesus tell them in His defense? He said that His father, God, has been continuously working, and so has he, Jesus. If God has been constantly working, meaning he has not rested, puts us still in day 6 of the creation. Which means God is still in the process of creation, not only of the universe, which we can clearly see, of the earth and life on the earth, and of course of us, humans, the crown of His creation.
Our physical form of flesh and blood is not the final product but only a step in the process of our creation. The process to complete our creation can only be done by following the teachings of Jesus, and we go through the transformation from a creation of flesh and blood to a spiritual, eternal existence then we will rest with God, on day 7 of creation in the new heaven and new earth as described at the end of the Bible in the book of Revelation
