Your brain is a complex collection of neurons (brain cells) that constantly send messages to each other. When inflammatory pain is present in the body, these neurons can get overly excited and send too many messages. To calm these overexcited neurons, other neurons tell them to slow down, which can reduce pain. Inhalation of 0.1% lavender essential oil reduced inflammatory pain through activation of projections in the anterior piriform cortex to the insular cortex in a preclinical model. Glutamatergic projects from the anterior piriform cortex innervate GABAergic neurons in the brain to inhibit glutamatergic neurons that are hyperactivated during inflammatory pain. In other words, one set of neurons told the other neurons to stop sending so many messages to reduce pain after inhaling lavender essential oil.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is a complex and challenging endeavor and there is no "magic bullet" for this despite the endless advertisements served up by social media. What you eat, how much you move, your stress and sleep, and hormone levels are just a few of the factors that must be considered to manage body weight.

Fortunately, research suggests that some essential oils may be supportive. A preclinical study found that inhalation of sweet basil (the linalool CT) essential oil for 20 minutes reduced total weight gain and total cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Inhalation of the whole oil resulted in greater reductions in LDL cholesterol than isolated linalool. Inhaling the oil for five minutes promoted a reduction in heart rate. Inhaling isolated linalool reduced the amount of white fat—less metabolically active fat and the most common type of fat found in humans. The data from this study suggests that simply inhaling sweet basil essential oil may have a positive effect on body composition, cholesterol, and cardiovascular health.

With the ever-increasing number of people with metabolic disorders involving poor blood sugar management, researchers are evaluating natural solutions to help address the problem. A recent study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-diabetic activity of citrus oils extracted from waste peels--lime, lemon, pomelo, bitter orange, sweet/wild orange, and grapefruit. What they found was that the oils possessed good antioxidant activity and inhibited two key enzymes that help balance blood sugar (amylase and glucosidase). Inhibiting these enzymes slows down the metabolism of carbs to sugars, helping to limit blood sugar spikes.

Oregano (O. onites) essential oil demonstrated liver protective activity in laboratory research. The oil regulated the expression of 32 out of 84 genes related to hepatotoxicity at least 2-fold or more—elevating the expression of 17 genes and diminishing the expression of 15 genes. Its main constituent, carvacrol, was also liver protective but modified the expression of fewer genes (16).
