Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸!! On this day, I always reflect on my ancestors that served in the Revolutionary War. My 7th great grandfather, Samuel Whitney, served as a Captain in the Continental Army. His sons: Samuel Whitney Jr, Captain Peter Whitney (served in the US Navy), Levi Whitney (captured and starved, then died a day after his release from the British), and Walter Whitney. I am proud of these men and the sacrifices they and their families made to serve our country, which gained freedom for our nation, and set us on the path to democracy. Let freedom ring! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I grew up in this area and traveled back and forth between these two towns for decades! It is amazing to see the stage coach road back in 1907. I wonder how long it took to travel from Quincy to Greenville back then.

Fun Photo Friday!

People called her Miss Morgan.
And Miss Morgan was just five feet tall, slender, dressed in drab, fragile looking. There was something Quakerish about her people said.
When she spoke, she did so softly. But “when she issued orders it was with the finality of a Marine drill sergeant.”
Miss Morgan was Julia Morgan. And Julia was an architect. One who graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1894. One who waited for two years for admission into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris because of her gender. And then became the first woman to graduate. And then she became the first woman to be registered as an architect in California.
In 1904, Julia opened her own architectural firm. Where she shared profits with her workers. And where her career lasted 42 years. Over which she designed about 790 structures, including Hearst Castle

I love this photo as it brings back so many memories. Although this photo is from the 1940s, there was a lot of snowfall in the 1970s when I was growing up. We went to school until the power went out regardless of how many feet of snow we had!

When researching, always locate a local historical or genealogy society where your ancestor lived to help with your research. They are such a big help with looking up obituaries, archived funeral home files, and lots of books. Remember not everything is digitized. Here is the link to the Paradise Genealogical Society http://www.pargenso.org/ . They are located in Paradise, California. Happy Hunting!
