Caring for a loved one is one of the most meaningful things you can do, but it's also one of the hardest. Caregiver burnout is real, and it often sneaks up on the people who are too busy giving to notice.

Here are 6 ways to care for yourself while caring for others:

☑️Ask for help. You don't have to do this alone.
☑️Schedule time for yourself, even if it's just a walk around the block.
☑️Don't skip your own doctor's appointments.
☑️Let go of the guilt. You're doing your best.
☑️Stay connected to people who lift you up.
☑️Rest before you hit empty, not after.

You matter too. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish, it's necessary.

February is American Heart Month. This month, take a little extra time for yourself. Move your body. Rest when you need to. And remember: the heart that loves your family, shows up for your friends, and carries you through each day, that heart is worth protecting.

Ever hear a song and instantly feel transported to another time?

There's real science behind it. Music activates the hippocampus and amygdala, the parts of your brain responsible for memory and emotion. When those areas light up together, memories don't just return. They return with feeling.

That's why a single song can take you back to a wedding, a road trip, or a moment with someone you love. The melody unlocks the memory and the emotion all at once.

It's rarely the big moments we hold onto after someone is gone. It's the little things.

The way they laughed. The stories they told a hundred times. Sunday morning routines. Inside jokes no one else would understand. The sound of their voice when they said your name.

And the objects that carry those memories. A favorite coffee mug. A worn recipe card in their handwriting. A watch they wore every day. A sweater that still smells like them.

These small, ordinary moments and simple belongings stay with us because they remind us of who someone really was and how deeply they were loved.

The start of a new year is filled with talk of fresh starts and resolutions. But for those carrying grief, January can feel heavy. The pressure to "move forward" can feel impossible when your heart is still anchored to someone you've lost. If that's you, here's your reminder: you don't have to have it all together. You don't have to feel hopeful yet. And you certainly don't have to "move on" just because the calendar changed.

A few gentle ways to care for yourself this new year:

-Let yourself feel whatever comes up. Grief doesn't follow a schedule. Give yourself permission to feel it all without judgment.

-Set boundaries. You don't have to say yes to every gathering or invitation. Protect your energy.

-Honor your loved one in small ways. Light a candle. Look at old photos. Say their name out loud.

-Lean on people who understand. Grief is not meant to be walked through alone.

-Be patient with yourself. Healing doesn't have a finish line. It takes the time it takes.

Fact: Funerals and memorial services can be as unique as the person being honored. Religious, spiritual, secular, or a blend of traditions. There's no right or wrong way to say goodbye. What matters most is that it feels meaningful to you.

It's one of the most important conversations you'll ever have—and one of the hardest to start. But talking about end-of-life wishes now is one of the most loving things you can do for the people you care about.

Not sure where to begin? Here are five caring ways to start:

1. Use someone else's story. A movie, a news story, or a friend's experience can open the door naturally.
2. Start with your own wishes. Lead by example: "I've been thinking about what I'd want someday..."
3. Frame it as a gift, not a burden. Sharing your wishes gives your family peace of mind.
4. Keep it casual. Some of the best conversations happen on a walk, over coffee, or during a long car ride.
5. Break it into smaller conversations. You don't have to cover everything at once. Start with one topic and build from there.

The goal isn't to have all the answers. It's just to start.
