đ Christmas Can Be Magical⌠and Overwhelming đ
For many childrenâespecially those with sensory sensitivitiesâthe holidays can feel really big. Bright lights, loud music, crowded rooms, scratchy clothes, new routines⌠itâs a lot.
If youâre noticing more meltdowns, shutdowns, or clinginess this season, youâre not doing anything wrongâand neither is your child. đ¤
Here are a few gentle ways to make Christmas easier:
⨠Create a calm space
A quiet corner, headphones, or a favorite comfort item can help kids reset.
⨠Prep ahead of time
Talk through plans, show pictures, or use a simple visual schedule so there are fewer surprises.
⨠Lower expectations
Itâs okay to leave early, skip events, or do things differently. Joy doesnât have to look traditional.
⨠Watch the sensory load
Dim lights, lower music, remove itchy outfits, and limit âone more thingâ moments.
⨠Offer control where you can
Let kids choose when to participateâor not. Autonomy builds safety.
⨠Build in recovery time
Downtime before and after events helps regulate overwhelmed nervous systems.
đ Christmas doesnât have to be loud to be joyful.
đ Different doesnât mean wrong.
đ Regulated kids feel safeâand safe kids can enjoy the season in their own way.
