Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease(involves more than one cause) and in order to have successful dry eye treatment we need to treat different subsections of dry eye with both IN-OFFICE and AT-HOME therapy.
4 Categories of dry eye that we treat:
- Tear film
- Bacteria, Biofilm, Demodex Mites
- Obstruction
- Inflammation
(Please note there may be other factors as well - diet, medications, systemic diseases, and environmental extrinsic factors)
🟠 Just using artificial tears
Yes, artificial tears can help heal scratches or patches of dryness on the front surface of the eye because some artificial tears contain hyaluronic acid and carbohydrates (like trehalose) that can prevent damage on epithelial cells and prevent cell death respectively. However, artificial tears are only palliative.
🟠 Inconsistency with at home therapy
At home therapy involves:
1) Eyelid hygiene:
Eyelid hygiene is an important step of home dry eye treatment and considered a long-term practice for patients that have been diagnosed with blepharitis or demodex blepharitis.
2) Warm compresses:
Application of a warm compress is usually the most commonly prescribed home therapy for MGD. Warm compresses help maintain the results for in-office procedures. Warm compresses as a sole therapy for MGD is often unsuccessful.
3) Omega 3s:
Supplementing with the right concentration of EPA/DHA Omega 3s help improve the expressibility and quality of the meibum inside your glands.
🟠 3) In-office treatments
🫧 Zocular Eyelid System Therapy (ZEST)
🫧 BlephEx
🫧 OptiLight IPL
🫧 RadioFrequency
