Our therapists are always learning and growing, piling on the certifications to ensure that they are up to date on all evidence-based practices. Here’s an example. Our speech therapist is currently working on her Lingrqphica certificate. This is a device that that uses pictures and speech generation to help increase receptive language and understanding topics. The device uses written words to help with verbal expression. It also allows for choices (picture + written word) to aid in cognition and visualizing of concrete topics. Further, caregivers can easily be engaged with the device as well for ongoing practice with facilitating language.

Holidays can be very difficult for people experiencing cognitive decline. During this season of love, our speech therapist has been key in supporting clients with full participation in their Valentine’s Day celebrations.

One client was unable to complete the higher level tasks of driving, obtaining a card, and drafting something to her husband. Our ST was able to present written phrases of which the client could choose, assist with writing the chosen phrase on a card, and prompt the client with signing and adding her own personal touches. The client’s ability to manage her relationship and the holiday in a meaningful way increased with the support of speech therapy.

On Wednesday, our fabulous OT Jeanie presented with Whole Home on safety at home for people with Parkinson’s Disease. They provided education on adaptive equipment for preparing meals and eating, as well as durable medical equipment for use in activities of daily living. Thank you to the Parkinson’s Support Group and Bayley Place for hosting this presentation!

On Friday, we were pleased to present at the Music, Movement, and Dementia workshop, hosted at Twin Lakes and coordinated by the Giving Voice Foundation. There were so many fantastic dementia care professionals and educational presentations. It was engaging and interactive! Our PT Dr. O and OT Jeanie Byrant provided some technical examples and sure had the crowd moving.

People often imagine speech and language therapy as assistance with someone’s verbal expression, however it goes far beyond this. Speech therapy also supports cognition and memory, and organization. This is a snapshot of a pile of mail, taken with a client’s permission. She is working on functional cognitive activities. This session focused on separating spam from real mail - items requiring action, items providing information, and items that can be discarded. Other functional cognitive activities involve recall of preferred events, such as watching favorite soap operas, church events, or current newsworthy events.
