π€π€±π½ Happy Black Breastfeeding Week!
Hereβs why Black Breastfeeding Week is important:
1. Black women have the lowest breastfeeding initiation & duration rates. Black women are more likely to be give birth prematurely & breast milk is a HUGE benefit to those babies (INCLUDING donor milk).
2. Mainstream breastfeeding advocacy often overlooks the specific cultural and historical experiences of Black families. Black Breastfeeding Week provides a platform to celebrate and normalize breastfeeding within the Black community.
3. Black Breastfeeding Week helps to address historical traumas. The legacy of slavery, wet nursing, and medical mistreatment has created a generational distrust of the healthcare system among some Black families.
4. Breast milk lowers risk for breast & ovarian cancers for mothers, lowers the risk for childhood cancers such as leukemia & lymphoma and boosts immune support for the baby.
5. Black Breastfeeding Week allows families to build their support system with fellow breastfeeding families. Theyβre also able to connect to professionals who will be able to understand & respect their cultural needs.
