Next Thursday is Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season. Holidays are often difficult for someone who has experienced the death of a loved one. Rather than being times of family togetherness and sharing, holidays can bring feelings of sadness, loss, and emptiness.

Lisa DeSieno, Bereavement Services director offers suggestions to help you better cope with your grief during this joyful, yet painful, time of the year. Remember that by being tolerant and compassionate with yourself, you will continue to heal.

In grief, the lead-up to a holiday can carry more ache than the day itself. Anticipatory grief is the emotional pain we feel in advance of a known absence; which can stir anxiety, sadness, and even guilt. It’s the quiet dread of the empty chair, the silence where laughter once lived, the way joy feels muted before it even arrives. This is normal. This is love remembering. If you’re feeling off in the days before a holiday, you’re not alone. Give yourself permission to soften your plans, honor your person, and let the day unfold gently.

Today, on Survivors of Su***de Loss Day, we acknowledge the profound and unique grief faced by those who have lost someone to su***de, to connect with others who understand their grief. Their grieving process is often uniquely complex, involving intense emotions of shock, sadness, guilt, anger, shame, and a persistent need to understand “why”. Stigma surrounding su***de can exacerbate these feelings, leading to isolation and potential delays in healing. It’s a time when individuals gather to share stores, find comfort, and support each other through the pain of loss.
