There is nothing more powerful than witnessing a young Black woman choose peace over fear when it comes to birth.

Tatyonna, a 21-year-old first-time mom, walked into our birth center in active labor determined to create a beautiful experience. And that’s exactly what she did.

There were moments she doubted herself. Moments she cried. Moments she said, “I can’t do this.” But she did. With her doula, her family, and our team surrounding her, she labored with strength, surrendered in transition, and brought her baby earthside with courage.

Unmedicated. Supported. Rooted. Powerful.

Watching her trust her body and reconnect with ancestral birth wisdom reminded me why this work matters. Birth does not have to be traumatic. In the right environment, with the right support, it can be transformative.

Honored to serve. Honored to pour back into our community. Honored to witness another mother step into her power.

🚨Back to Business

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ALDPH) has proposed regulations that will severely limit access to birth center care. 37% of counties in Alabama are Maternity Care Deserts and Alabama has the third highest rate of pregnancy related mortality in the nation. Birth centers are a proven solution to the perinatal healthcare crisis. Alabama Department of Public Health is making it nearly impossible for birth centers to remain open and operate.

Alabama Birth Coalition stands with Alabama families, midwives, and physicians who are fighting for health equity and accessibility.

A public hearing is scheduled on July 13th from 2-4pm Central Time, at 3060 Mobile Highway, Montgomery, Alabama. ABC along with American Association of Birth Centers will be there speaking out against these unacceptable regs. We need people to show up for Alabama birth centers and families. Let us know if you're coming or if you need to carpool in order to make travel more accessible!

(4) Families will receive midwifery care and a birth center birth at a deeply discounted rate (valued at $6500 each)

BRITTNEY GRINER IS COMING HOME! Sending love to Brittney’s friends, family and her wife, Cherelle who never stopped speaking out for her freedom. We are so sad for what she and her loved ones have endured and celebrate their imminent reunion. Some good news in these complicated times.

Last night, we made history as we welcomed Alabama’s first official birth center baby and I got the honor to bring this sweet girl earthside! ✨This is my second time serving this family; first as an assistant to Midwife Jo and this time as their Primary Midwife! Oasis Family Birthing Center is officially serving families and accepting new patients.

Please join me in welcoming sweet Peyton to the Magic City and thanking her family for allowing us to share her with each of you! Congratulations to Keonta, Justin and Peyton’s big brothers! Thank you for making sure we were nourished and for taking care of us while we took care of you! 🤎

As some of you know, has been studying and documenting the history of Alabama’s Grand Midwives for the past few years. Now, we’re partnering with the to launch an official historical preservation project.

This is a four-phase project seeking to preserve the history and legacy of Alabama’s Black Grand Midwives. During this first phase, we are hoping the community will help add to our 500+ midwifery name database.

*edit: The original claim in 1974 was that the midwives were non existent or too few to matter. The later claims most of us are familiar with came within the next year or so which then led to the outlawing of them completely.
