Hey Therapists! Are you experiencing stagnation in some of your sessions? These 3 things may be blocking progress:
1. If you’re anything like me, your therapeutic style is free flowing and client centered. At times, this has gotten me “lost in the woods” with clients… treatment goals are your North Star! They can help refocus you and your client and give you some direction.
2. What do you do when someone doesn’t hear you? Repeat yourself, right? That’s our natural inclination emotionally too. When we don’t feel heard, seen, or acknowledged, we have the tendency to repeat ourselves. If your client seems to be circling around the same issues/events, it may be they need to feel heard. Go back to some basic active listening skills, including lots of reflections and empathy.
3. One plants the seeds, one waters… if your your sessions are feeling stale, it may just be time to transition. Perhaps, you’ve taken the client as far as you can and they need a new/different perspective. Or maybe they are in a good place to pause. Affirm their progress and let them go.
