Honoring Black History in Health Care: Mary Eliza Mahoney, RN

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to recognize the trailblazers whose courage, dedication, and compassion shaped the healthcare system we know today. One such pioneer is Mary Eliza Mahoney, a woman whose legacy continues to inspire nurses, caregivers, and home care professionals across the nation.

Mary Eliza Mahoney made history in 1879 when she became the first African American professionally trained nurse in the United States. She graduated from the New England Hospital for Women and Children’s rigorous nursing program, completing a course that very few applicants of any race were able to finish at the time. Her achievement was groundbreaking during an era marked by racial and gender barriers, especially in the medical field.

Following her graduation, Mahoney worked primarily as a private-duty nurse, a role that closely aligns with today’s home care profession. She was known for her exceptional skill, professionalism, and compassionate bedside manner, earning deep respect from patients and families alike. Her work highlighted the importance of dignity, trust, and personalized care—values that remain central to quality home health services today.

Beyond her nursing practice, Mary Eliza Mahoney was a passionate advocate for equality in healthcare. She became one of the first members of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN), an organization dedicated to supporting Black nurses and combating racial discrimination in the profession. Her leadership helped open doors for future generations of nurses and caregivers, creating pathways that continue to expand opportunities in healthcare.

Mary Eliza Mahoney’s legacy lives on through every nurse, aide, and caregiver who provides compassionate care in homes, facilities, and communities. Her story reminds us that healthcare is not just about medical skills it is about heart, service, and commitment to uplifting others.

At A Promise To Care East, we honor pioneers like Mary Eliza Mahoney by continuing her mission: delivering compassionate care, creating opportunities through training and education, and strengthening our community one family at a time.

How it unfolded

I am a RN working at the forefront of nursing. I witnessed so many patients who could benefit from a quality home care provider. Being involved in care conferences allowed me direct understanding of the clinical need when patients didn’t meet the standard insurance guidelines for the realistic assistance they could benefit from. I overheard a conversation, which lead to many inquiries with many people on multiple levels and platforms. I shared my determination with some and held it back from most. Some I shared it with, I received positive feedback, and there were confrontations as well. However, I “youtubed” what I wanted to know, the last video I watched, I listened to the story of a home care CEO and how she raised her own bar. I literally cried while I was taking notes. I networked as I was directed to take standard steps. I spent money I didn’t have, I couldn’t sleep, I spent hours on end researching, designing marketing materials, conferences, etc. When I tell you this company was built on faith, determination, and dedication, in that order. The 5 year goal I set, turned into a brand in 2 months. My clinical expertise coupled with my strong advocate skills worked in favor of advancing. For more details on the company, please feel free to visit our website (link is on page).
