For many Americans, politics is a major source of stress. Not everyone can step away from it, but here are some strategies to help you cope during difficult times.
1. Set Limits
Set personal limits & boundaries with others. Be selective about political conversations and media, and reduce how much you consume.
2. Practice Mindfulness
Anxiety and depression pull us into the past or future. Staying present and engaging in activities intentionally can help reduce overwhelm.
3. Routine
Create a routine that meets your needs, including nutrition and movement. Routine reduces uncertainty and helps you feel safer.
4. Social
Stay socially connected! Spend time with loved ones & continue traditions, especially during the holidays.
5. Make Meaning
Finding meaning in difficult times supports healing. Contribute to causes you care about in manageable ways. Whether it's emailing a representative, volunteering, or using whatever resources you have to support your values.
6. Rest
Rest is essential for progress. Take time to recover, process emotions, & step back when needed. Offer yourself compassion.
If you need support, reach out.
You aren't alone.
