With heavy hearts yet deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Dorothy Elmer McGory, who transitioned in her sleep on February 20, 2026.
Born on January 28, 1940, in Okolona, Mississippi, to Josephine Finnie and Elmer Carter. Dorothy was the heart and foundation of her family.
Dorothy was a devoted educator, accomplished scholar, and visionary entrepreneur whose life was defined by faith, determination, and excellence. She pursued higher education with dedication, earning her college degrees from Okolona Community College and Mississippi
Valley State University, milestones that reflected her deep belief in learning and self-improvement. Her academic achievements laid the foundation for a meaningful career as a retired school teacher, where she shaped the minds and futures of countless students. She poured wisdom, patience, and encouragement into every classroom she entered and instilled the value of education into generations of her family.
Beyond the classroom, Dorothy was a remarkable serial entrepreneur. Her ambition and strong work ethic led her to successfully own and operate multiple businesses throughout her lifetime, including daycares, restaurants, trucking companies, and nightclubs. She was a trailblazer, resilient, fearless, and ahead of her time, creating opportunities not only for herself, but for others in her community.
Dorothy was the cherished matriarch and cornerstone of her family. She was an only child to her mother. She was the oldest grandchild to her late grandparents and had a ton of cousins who all looked at her as a big sister. Her life reminds us that a woman can be nurturing and powerful, graceful and determined, faithful and fearless; all at once.
Dorothy found deep joy in flowers and gardening. She had a special gift for nurturing. Her hands cultivated beauty from the soil, and her gardens were reflections of her spirit: vibrant, resilient, and full of life. Tending to her plants brought her peace, and she often reminded her family that with love, patience, and faith, anything could grow. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue blooming through the lives she touched—both in her family and in her community.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; husband, Bobby McGory; both of her daughters, Jennifer Finnie and Josephine Dawson; grandson, Damian Finnie; and granddaughter, Bianca Finnie.
She leaves to cherish her legacy: one son, Servantes McGory (Miranda McGory) of Tupelo, MS; five granddaughters, LaNishia Finnie of Tupelo, MS, Nina Dawson of Okolona, MS, Seirra Dawson of Fort Mill, SC, Magen Dawson of Haltom City, TX, and Ariel Dunlap (Romiell) of Mooreville, MS; two grandsons, Devaughntae Spann (Delia Spann) of Tupelo, MS, and Allen Spann of Okolona, MS; one half-sister, Doris Webb (Eronis) of Chicago, IL; and eleven great-grandchildren: Nicholas Smith, Jr., Nivia Smith, Nadia Smith, Brailey Wells, Jennifer Finnie, Skylar Durham, Dustin Spann, Rhylen and Reid Dunlap, Astrid Hodges, and Amir Spann.
Through our hearts mourn her absence, we find comfort in knowing she transitioned peacefully, resting gently after a long and impactful life.
