Our very own Dr. Doug Tolleson, Director of the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Lab, just returned from an incredible experience in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon! Dr. Tolleson was invited by Dr. Jesús Velazco, Director of Perishables at H-E-B México, to participate in a 3-day intensive workshop as part of their ongoing series for beef producers focused on Animal Welfare, Sustainability, and Traceability. 🌾

Dr. Tolleson presented on: “Managing rangeland and animal resources to meet ranching sustainability goals”

Through a dynamic combination of lectures, interactive group discussions, and hands-on classroom exercises, Dr. Tolleson worked with an outstanding group of 25 participants including:
• Ranchers
• Feedlot and dairy operators
• Feed and animal health suppliers

📍 The workshop was held at the Monterrey Tech campus, where participants dove deep into three key areas:
✓ Basic rangeland resources
✓ Grazing animal (livestock and wildlife) management
✓ Practical economic and ecological sustainability.

The group was highly engaged, asking challenging questions and fostering collaborative learning. As Dr. Tolleson noted: “I learned more from them than they did from me. We all learned from each other. Win-Win.”

A huge thank you to Dr. Velasco and his team for the invitation, logistics, and exceptional hospitality. Plans are already underway for next year’s workshop! 🤝

This past Tuesday we hosted the South Texas Grazingland Nutritional Monitoring Workshop in Kingsville, Texas! 🤠🌾This collaborative event brought together students, professors, ranchers, and members of the public for a day of learning that included indoor speaker sessions, hands-on outdoor field stations with NIRS demonstrations, soil stations, rain simulator, body condition scoring, plant identification, and a student poster session showcasing ongoing research.🌾🔬

Thank you to our speakers from the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, and Texas Native Seeds.

A heartfelt thank you to the local ranchers we’ve been working with over the past few months, who joined us for this workshop. Your experience and perspectives enriched the discussions throughout the day, and we’re grateful to have you as partners in advancing rangeland stewardship in South Texas.🌾

Here’s to learning from the land, learning from the cows, and learning from each other!🐂🌾

Our Director, Dr. Doug Tolleson, is in McGregor, Texas, conducting a crime scene investigation simulation with our portable NIR instrument. The scenario involves cattle theft where perpetrators either brand unbranded cattle or alter existing brands to disguise ownership.

Dr. Tolleson collects multiple measurements, including the height and width of brands, to determine the original brand size based on cattle growth curves. The portable NIR spectroscopy provides an additional layer of analysis by examining the biochemical composition of the brand tissue. As brands heal over time, their chemistry undergoes detectable changes that the NIR instrument can identify, providing valuable forensic evidence.

Dr. Tolleson has been developing and refining this technique over years of research, demonstrating the practical application of spectroscopy technology in livestock forensics and theft prevention.🐂🕵️‍♂️

📊 Great news!

Your GAN Lab reports on Nutbal Online now include a Body Condition Score (BCS) Projection Chart.

This new feature gives you a clearer view of how your herd’s condition may change over the next few weeks. Each dot shows the projected BCS, while the bars highlight the possible range around those estimates. The further out the projection, the wider the range becomes.📈

These ranges are a reminder that the results are guides, not guarantees. It’s a practical tool designed to help you plan ahead while accounting for natural variation in grazing systems. ✅

👉 Log into your Nutbal Online account today to explore this new feature and make the most of your reports!
