Yesterday we welcomed a group of cattle producers from Mexico to Texas A&M AgriLife.

The visit began at the Texas A&M Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Center (Repro Lab) at the RELLIS Campus, where the group learned about current work in reproductive technologies and their applications in livestock production.

The group then continued their visit at the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Lab, where lab manager Dr. Barbara Rodrigues shared how f***l NIRS technology is used to monitor the nutritional status of grazing animals and support better management decisions in rangeland systems.

They also attended a session at the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, where Dr. David Matarrita-Cascante presented on “Changing Rural Areas and Agrifood Systems in Texas”, and GAN Lab director, Dr. Doug Tolleson discussed “Nutritional Monitoring of Grazing Animals” and its applications for grazing management.

It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas about grazing management, rangeland stewardship, and the role of science and technology in supporting producers.

Thank you to everyone involved in organizing the visit.

¡Muchas gracias por su visita! Fue un gusto recibirlos y compartir ideas sobre producción ganadera y manejo de pastizales. Esperamos que esta sea la primera de muchas oportunidades para seguir colaborando.

Congratulations to Christopher McCoy, for successfully defending his master’s thesis!

His research focused on developing soil near-infrared spectroscopy calibrations for West Texas Aridisols and North Texas Panhandle Alfisols and Mollisols to support rapid and accurate soil analysis across diverse rangeland systems.

We are proud of his hard work and excited to see the continued development and application of this research.

📍 National Bison Association Winter Conference | Denver, CO

Dr. Doug Tolleson represented the GAN Lab during the “Decoding Bison” session alongside an outstanding group of speakers and approximately 100 attendees:

• Jeff M. Martin, Ph.D. (SDSU) – Session Chair
• Dr. Rachel Short – Building bridges between producers and NRCS (SDSU CIG)
• Dr. Philip Urso – RCN Bison Health Project and mineral requirements in bison
• Angela Lemminger – Updated bison body condition scoring (SDSU)
• Dr. Doug Tolleson – What the GAN Lab at Texas A&M University can do for bison producers

This meeting was also a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with a bison producer community that the late Dr. Jerry Stuth engaged with more than 25 years ago. The GAN Lab has a long-standing history of working with bison systems, and it was rewarding to continue that legacy.

We truly appreciated the conversations, questions, and feedback from producers, researchers, and partners.

We would be happy to follow up and continue the conversation.

"Bison are willing teachers, if we are willing students."
Dr. Jeff Martin

This morning at the 2026 National Bison Association Winter Conference we are exploring Decoding Bison with the following bison specialists:
● Dr. Jeff Martin
● Dr. Rachel Short - Building Bridges Between Producers & NRCS with the SDSU CIG
● Dr. Phil Urso - New RCN Bison Health Project at SDSU & Update on Mineral
Requirements in Bison
● Angie Lemminger - Updated Bison Body Condition Scoring Available Through SDSU
● Dr. Doug Tolleson - What the GAN Lab at Texas A&M University can do for you
