There’s been a lot of questions from residents and families wondering what happened to the beloved pigeon — known by many names given by our residents and staff, including Stellar, Hosea Jr., and Oscar. Great news: we were able to safely catch him and take him to the Humane Society, where he was adopted on Saturday! He’s now living as a cherished pet, leaving his tough racing days behind.
The pigeon first appeared at our community in late August, seeking refuge in the front corridor. After noticing colored bands on his legs, staff contacted the Humane Society, who explained that he was a lost racing pigeon likely abandoned after a long, grueling race. Following their advice, staff and residents provided him with food and water — and it quickly became clear how hungry and exhausted he was. Residents gathered daily to check on him, pulling up chairs or rolling to the entrance in their wheelchairs, offering care, comfort, and company.
As the days passed, he became part of our community, perching near windows and greeting everyone who came through the doors. With winter approaching, staff knew it was time to help him find a safe home. After a careful rescue, the Humane Society confirmed he was underweight but began nursing him back to health.
His story couldn’t have a better ending. A frequent visitor in our community had been watching him and following his story and when she heard he was up for adoption, she quickly raced over to the Humane Society eager to give him a warm and loving indoor home as a pet. Though we miss him dearly, we’re grateful to have been part of his journey — and honored that he chose our community as his flock.
