If it feels difficult to smoothly take a deep breath, if it feels like something is catching or blocking your belly from smoothly expanding as you breathe, try this.
Put your hands on the sides of your ribcage. Now, as you take a breath, try to expand outward against your hands. It should feel like you are expanding your ribcage toward both sides, left and right.
Try that a few times. Try it several times throughout the day. See if it helps loosen your diaphragm for easier breathing.
I would love to hear about your experience with this technique!

Take a deep breath. There's a lot of stress in the world and breathing better will help a little.
Slowly let your lungs expand, and also allow your entire belly to expand. Gently. Don't take the deepest breath in history, just nice and filling.
Does that feel easy? Can your whole belly expand smoothly? Or do you feel a catch or tightness somewhere?
Just notice. Don't judge it.
Comment and tell me how that feels for you.

The diaphragm is a muscle that runs from side to side between where our abdominal organs are and where our lungs are. Our belly expands when we breathe correctly because when we take a breath our diaphragm contracts and moved downward. That creates a suction in our lungs to draw in air and it also crowds our abdominal organs a little bit so that they make our belly expand outward. Most of us breathe very shallowly out of habit and stress. It's helpful to practice this deep, easy breathing.

Right now, stop for a minute and think about what your feet feel like.
Can you feel where your shoes are touching them? Or are they bare and you can feel the air on them? Can you feel the weight of them on the floor? Try pressing them into the floor for a few seconds. Are your toes tight or relaxed? Do you notice anything else about your feet?

In our busy world we can easily become disengaged from our bodies. We're out of touch with our own selves until something screams for attention. Learning to be aware of our bodies helps us be more integrated, and can be an important step toward better health.
