reminds us that diabetes management is not just physical, it is also mental and emotional.

Stress triggers the body to release hormones that raise blood sugar levels, making it harder to manage diabetes and increasing health risks.

Through programs supported by Diabetes Free SC, our partners across South Carolina are helping people access tools and education that support mental health and whole-person care.

Managing diabetes is a lifelong journey, and women across South Carolina are finding the support they need through the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI).

Since 2022, more than 1,370 women have joined WHI programs at Prisma Health, MUSC Health and Clemson Rural Health. Participants are seeing real results, including A1C reductions of nearly 25 percent for some graduates.

With a support extension from Diabetes Free SC, these programs will continue through 2025 and 2026, ensuring women receive the care and resources they need.

Bridging the Gap in Postpartum Diabetes Care.

For many women, managing diabetes doesn’t end with childbirth. It becomes a new chapter. That’s where the Diabetes Free SC Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) plays a critical role.

WHI promotes wellness for women with or at risk for diabetes and works to reduce disparities in access to and quality of care. Through clinics at Prisma Health and MUSC Health, the initiative provides ongoing support for women transitioning from the SC MOMs program into postpartum care.

By offering continued, patient-centered care, WHI helps new mothers manage the dual challenges of diabetes and early motherhood. Health care should not stop at delivery. https://bit.ly/4lRt7n3

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent and manage diabetes.

Diabetes Free SC is proud to support the launch of the SHIELD program, Spiritual Health Initiative for Eliminating and Lowering Diabetes, at two trusted community sites: Welfare Baptist Church in Belton and Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center - BLEC in West Columbia.

Each site is offering a 12-week, culturally tailored program focused on education, prevention and support for adults with or at risk for diabetes. By meeting people where they are, SHIELD helps empower healthier decisions through connection, trust and shared knowledge.

Healthy Palmetto recently unveiled its 2025–2029 statewide action plan, targeting six strategic priorities such as nutrition supports, food-is-medicine interventions, community mobility, school and outdoor physical activity opportunities

Since 2020, Diabetes Free SC has funded programs that align closely with these strategies. We’re grateful to align with Healthy Palmetto and more than 40 partner organizations in building healthier communities through community action.

Preventing diabetes starts well before diagnosis. For many children, that prevention begins at school.

Why focus on schools? Because most children spend the majority of their time in classrooms. That makes schools a powerful place for prevention.

Through support from Diabetes Free SC, Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the MUSC Boeing Center for Children's Wellness are helping districts across South Carolina implement policy, systems and environmental changes.

This is what long-term health impact looks like. Learn more here: https://youtu.be/Mn0zs_DZGfw
