On this day we remember what happened 24 years ago. We remember the innocent lives lost, and the brave men and women who put themselves last in what had to be the most terrifying moment of their lives.
First came destruction, then panic, chaos, fear, and worry. Fear of what might happen next. Worry for the people trapped inside, and the heroes running in to help however they possibly can. The events that unfolded that day were absolutely horrific. But something so evil that shook the entire country to its core would soon become a symbol of unity.
In the days that followed, the entire country set aside our differences. We didnāt care what someone looked like, where they came from, what they believed, or who they voted for. Politics werenāt even a thought. In days of catastrophic death and destruction, we identified as one thing - American.
We cared for one another. We checked on each other. Talked to people we wouldnāt normally talk to. We confided in each other. We had empathy and compassion for others. We all grieved, and we all rose from the rubble together.
Where has that compassion gone? We still grieve a tragedy that happened a quarter of a century ago, and rightfully so. But what about today? What about the tragedies that are happening in real time, right in front of our faces? Why are we so quick to hate, but so slow to care? We spew hatred to others for thinking differently. We approach conversations with aggression, not patience. We commit violent crimes, murder even, because we donāt like the things someone else says. Thatās not American - itās pure evil.
We need compassion. We need compromise. We need love. We need patience while we try to understand one another on a deeper level. We need to value human lives more than our own bias, manipulated opinions. We need to think for ourselves, and not think how others tell us to just because theyāre famous. We need to get back to being American, and we need to do it fast.
To the heroes who risk their lives every day - Thank you. Thank you for choosing a path most are too scared to even consider. Thank you for protecting our freedoms, and thank you for caring.
Peace. Love. Compassion. America šŗšø
