The Winter Solstice marks the exact moment the Earth reaches stillness in its turning.
At 10:03 AM Eastern Time, the Sun pauses at its southernmost point in the sky, and the longest night occurs.

What’s interesting is that the Sun doesn’t rush back after this. For a few days, it appears to stop moving along the horizon entirely. That pause is actually where the word solstice comes from, solstitium, meaning the sun stands still.

Even though this is the turning point toward longer days, sunrise continues to get later for a while. The return of light starts so subtly you can’t really see it yet.

Another surprising thing: the Earth is actually closer to the Sun in winter, not farther away. Cold comes from the planet’s tilt, not distance. It’s a quiet reminder that what we feel isn’t always the full picture.

Above ground, trees look dormant. But below the surface, they’re anything but inactive. Roots are communicating. Internal repair is happening. Energy is being conserved for what comes next.

Many animals enter their deepest state of metabolic rest around the solstice, not during the coldest part of winter. The body seems to know when to slow down before it’s forced to.

Humans respond too, whether we realize it or not. Circadian rhythms shift. Melatonin increases. The nervous system naturally leans toward rest, quiet, and less stimulation.

And even though this is the longest night, the coldest temperatures usually arrive weeks later. Nature moves with delay, not urgency.

Ancient cultures didn’t mark this moment to celebrate or perform rituals the way we often imagine. They tracked it for timing, to know when to stop intervening and trust what had already been stored.

The solstice isn’t about change happening instantly.
It’s about the turn beginning.

The Summer Solstice, occurring on June 21st at 10:15AM, is a perfect time for yoga, particularly Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) to honor the sun and celebrate the longest day of the year. Yoga practices can help channel the transformative energy of the solstice, focusing on themes of inner fire, strength, and new beginnings. Strengthen your practice by beginning each day with Sun Salutations...there is no better time to establish individual self love.

In yoga, the number 108 is considered sacred and significant, often associated with spiritual completion and divine connection. It is used in various yoga practices like sun salutations, chanting mantras, and breathing exercises. You will find
there is a plethora of information on the deep and profound meaning of 108 should you choose to look a bit deeper. Summer Solstice is often celebrated by practicing 108 Sun Salutations on that day. If 108 Sun Salutations is not for you, consider a factor of 108.... The factors of 108 are the numbers that divide 108 evenly. These are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 27, 36, 54, and 108. Perhaps, consider a factor of 108 to incorporate sun salutations into your morning routine.

Our group yoga practice will be on break for the next few weeks. We will gather again beginning Wednesday, August 6th at 6:30PM -7:30PM. PM me if you are interested in participating when we resume.

Embrace the Summer Solstice and July 4th Independence Day... independence is the understanding that you have all the wisdom you need right inside of you if you just look closely enough.

Enjoy the rest of August. Our transitional month of September will be here soon.

Moving into high summer, autumn is visible on the horizon. The sun is gradually waning and losing its power; the days are getting shorter, and each morning the sun gets up a little later and goes to bed a little earlier. The energy of the Earth is moving from: fire to water; yang to yin; outer to inner, sun to moon, and if we can flow with this change of energy, and gradually shift from outward pursuits to a more inward focus of contemplation, then it can be a wonderful way of keeping our life in balance.
Our yoga practice in summer to autumn can focus on cultivating contentment, gratitude, and happiness. Yoga Sutra 2.42 states “Perfect happiness is attained through contentment.” When we cultivate gratitude as a spiritual practice, contentment (santosha) naturally follows, and from contentment happiness blooms. Whereas happiness can be elusive, the path of gratitude and contentment is always available to us.
Make plans to transition to a time of abundance. When you’re out walking look out for the signs of the fruitfulness of trees: acorns forming on oak trees; conkers on horse-chestnut trees; berries on the hawthorn tree; and of course, fruit on fruit trees. Mindfully observe a tree that you feel drawn to with an open-mind and curiosity. Use your five senses to enjoy and appreciate its fruitfulness.

Meditation reflective question: How will I celebrate my harvest and how will I share my abundance with others?

Today is the day...or officially at 11:06 pm tonight...Spring arrives! The equinox simply means that the length of day and night are (almost!) equal. (In fact, the word "equinox" comes from two Latin words that together mean "equal night": aequus (equal) and nox (night). So, today...March 19th, we'll have approximately 12 hours of sunlight! After this day, this hemisphere starts tilting toward the sun, which means more daylight each day and warmer, springier weather. Explore this opportunity to bring balance into your life. Balance is not static. Balance is within a gentle movement, a shifting of back and forth between the left and the right of the mind, the body, perspectives. As this shift occurs, discover the center within that allows you to have peace, steadiness...balance. Happy Spring!

It may not work for some of you to come to Wednesday evening classes but I am grateful for those that are able to participate and those that hope to return.

Just checking in to see if anybody would be interested in an alternative/additional day/time for yoga. There will not be any class on February 14th but I am considering holding space on Tuesday, February 13th at 6:30pm-7:30pm that week.

In addition (aside from the Valentine's week class) are there any other days/times that would work out better for you? Not just as a substitute, but in addition to the Wednesday evening class...maybe early morning or midday?

It would be wonderful if more folks were able to get back into their practice and not be held back by a time slot. There are POSSIBILITIES.

Please let me know your thoughts, ideas, or concerns. Private yoga sessions specifically designed to meet your needs are available along with Reiki, and now, Ayurveda.
