For the last few years, I’ve posted reflections on the 9 Dimensions of Wellness near the top of the year as a way to refresh our awareness of and commitment to self care practices that support comprehensive wellbeing.
As I’ve grown in my dedication to self care, three practices in particular have risen to the top as my passions: gardening, travel, and counseling. The latter is highly individualized and very important (get you a counselor!), but the first two lend themselves to communal conversation.
Gardening and travel remind us that nothing thrives alone—growth requires cooperation, respect for difference, and shared care.
In tending what’s close and learning from places beyond our own, we’re invited to practice self care that doesn’t stop with us. Especially for women of color, nurturing ourselves is how we stay connected, resourced, and able to care for our communities with intention.
