One of the most underrated tools in labor isn’t found in a hospital bag or on a birth plan — it’s understanding the physiology of birth.

When you know what your body is doing, why it’s doing it, and how each phase works, something incredible happens:
you move from fear âžť confidence, from tension âžť trust.

Understanding birth physiology can actually decrease pain.
Here’s how:
Less Fear = Less Tension
Fear triggers the body’s fight-or-flight response, which tightens muscles and intensifies sensations. When you understand the purpose behind contractions or pressure, your body is more likely to stay relaxed — and relaxation reduces pain.

You’re More in Control
Knowing what’s normal helps you anticipate changes, make informed decisions, and stay grounded. When your brain can label what’s happening, the intensity becomes more manageable.

You Can Work With Your Body
Birth education teaches positioning, breathing, and coping skills that support how the uterus and pelvic floor naturally function. When you move and breathe in ways that help the process, discomfort often decreases.

Confidence Changes Everything
A confident birther releases more oxytocin and endorphins — your body’s natural labor-supporting and pain-relieving hormones. Knowledge nurtures that confidence.

Birth isn’t something to fear — it’s something to understand.
And when you understand it, you reclaim your power.

People often think doulas are “just emotional support,” but let’s be clear… we put in real, physical work at every birth.

We’re holding bodies up when contractions hit.
We’re applying counter pressure for hours.
We’re doing those hip squeezes until our arms are shaking — and then doing them again because it helps you breathe through the next wave.

Doulas aren’t only there to talk you through the hard moments…
We’re there to move with you, support your body, and offer hands-on comfort that can literally change how labor feels.

From double hip squeezes and rebozo work…
to helping position your body for progress…
to supporting tired legs, tired backs, tired hearts —

doulas show up with skill, strength, and so much care.

Emotional support is part of what we do.
But physical support?
That’s our superpower.

There are 3 stages to the birthing process:
Knowing what your body is doing in labor can replace fear with confidence.

Stage 1: Early & Active Labor
Your cervix dilates from 0–10 cm. Contractions become longer, stronger, and closer together.
Tip: Rest in early labor, hydrate, and use movement or warm water for comfort.

Stage 2: The Pushing Stage
Once fully dilated, your body begins bearing down. Baby descends and is born.
Tip: Try different pushing positions — side-lying, squatting, hands-and-knees — to open the pelvis.

Stage 3: The Placenta Stage
After baby arrives, your body gently releases the placenta.
Tip: Skin-to-skin helps your hormones support this stage naturally.

When you understand what’s happening, each step feels less overwhelming and more empowering.

When you’re pregnant or in labor, decisions can come fast.
Sometimes too fast.

That’s why we love the BRAIN acronym — a simple, powerful tool to help you pause, stay informed, and make choices that feel right for you.

Remember:
You always have the right to ask questions.
You always have the right to understand your options.
You always have the right to choose what feels best for your body and baby.

Advocacy starts with confidence, and confidence starts with information.
BRAIN is your built-in reminder that you’re allowed to think—deeply and intentionally—before saying yes.

Holiday Reminder: Let Baby Bake

The holidays can make everything feel rushed — shopping, cooking, traveling… but one thing that never needs to be rushed is your baby’s arrival.

Unless there’s a true medical reason, letting your baby “bake” until they’re ready supports:
-healthier lungs
-better feeding
-more stable blood sugar
-smoother postpartum recovery
-lower risk of NICU time

Your body and baby know what they’re doing — even in December.
So give yourself permission to slow down, set boundaries, and protect your due-date window.

Holiday plans can wait. Healthy births can’t. So let baby bake!
