Maybe we think we are just being humble?
Or maybe we gotta make sure people understand we are not getting conceited or prideful.
Perhaps if you put yourself down first, you make sure other people can’t do it. Hurts less that way.
Whatever the reason, I recommend you stop this insidious habit.
Stop putting yourself down. Stop dismissing compliments. Stop deflecting positive feedback. Stop focusing on what you lack or what you might consider your weaknesses.
We know flaws exist. We know we have work to do. But we also want to love what we have to offer, and to feel confident when we’re dancing.
To nurture that, you gotta stop saying crap like this. I mean this with so much love.
Just stop. When you get positive feedback, just say:
THANK YOU. Period.
Let it land. Soak it in. Give it a minute to settle in.
You’re the kind of person who works really hard and gets good feedback. You’re the kind of dancer that people notice. You’re the kind of person that people pay compliments to and recognize all the hard work you’ve been doing. You’re the type of dancer who is always growing and learning and getting better, and there’s evidence for that.
That’s who you are. Or who you are becoming at least. Focus on that.
Let it land.
THANK YOU.
