Sometimes, Ethics Advisors is called upon to walk alongside patients and families as they face the unimaginable. Our virtual platform allows us to have heart-wrenching but important conversations at the patient's bedside with the family and medical providers present. One of the most common types of conversations, especially at the end-of-life, includes the clarification of values that might guide decisions that the patient is making, or that are being made by a surrogate on behalf of the patient. These values might be longevity, maintenance of bodily integrity, maintenance of physical function, autonomy and independence, social and emotional engagement, avoidance of burdensome physical symptoms, or the adherence to religious or spiritual beliefs. Each of these values might correspond to different goals of care: The repair or restoration of function, the relief of suffering, curing disease, prolongation of life, the support of families and loved ones, a good death, symptom management, and so on. Sometimes these conversations can help to provide clarity on a path forward. What an honor to serve families in their most poignant moments.
Please consider voting for Ethics Advisors in the FedEx Small Business Competition. We hope to scale our ability to serve families, providers, and hospitals.
