When odor molecules are detected, signals travel directly from the olfactory bulb to limbic structures like the amygdala and hippocampus—areas responsible for emotion and memory—bypassing the brain’s usual sensory “filter.”
Because the limbic system is evolutionarily ancient and operates largely outside conscious awareness, smells can trigger powerful emotional responses or vivid memories almost instantly, before the rational brain has time to analyze or name the stimulus.
