Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has

grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

Strength training is a powerful (and often overlooked) complement to walking that supports stronger muscles, better balance, and long-term health.

In Dr. David Sabgir's latest newsletter, he breaks down why adding just a couple of strength sessions each week can boost everything from daily function to longevity, and how simple, approachable movements can make a big impact, no gym membership needed! https://walkwithadoc.org/2026/04/strength-training/

The new Walk with a Doc program in Puyallup, Washington, is off to a great start! Despite rainy weather last weekend, they welcomed more than 20 walkers ranging in age from 3 to 93. After a discussion on understanding food labels, the group enjoyed a walk around the lake. Walk Leader Dr. Emily Bertani shared, “My heart was so full of joy, and there were so many smiles. I can’t wait until next month.”

On this day 21 years ago, David Sabgir waited at the park, hopeful that a few patients might accept his invitation to join him for a walk. Sure enough, many of them did.

Dr. Sabgir describes that day as “magical”, patients and neighbors walking side by side, smiling, asking questions, and discovering that health can happen outside of the exam room.

Since that day in 2005, thousands of doctors in 60+ countries have volunteered to lead Walk with a Doc programs in their communities, helping people live healthier, happier lives, one step at a time.

What started as a simple idea has grown into a global movement, and we’re just getting started!

Thank you for considering a $21 donation to celebrate our 21st anniversary and support the movement for years to come: https://walkwithadoc.org/donate

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.
