Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

In 2005, one cardiologist started inviting his patients to join him for a walk on Saturday mornings. Today, we’ve just enrolled our 700th active Walk with a Doc chapter!

What started as a simple idea has become a global movement, with communities in 40 countries coming together each month to walk with their local doctors. The power of movement, togetherness, learning, and nature is bringing people together in ways we never imagined.

Thank you to the 700 communities who believe in this simple yet powerful mission. We're just getting started, and we're excited to help thousands more bring the program to their communities in the years to come.

Everything is bigger in Texas, including Walk with a Doc!

Thanks to an incredible partnership with the Texas Medical Association, 2025 marked another powerful year for Walk with a Doc Texas: 83 chapters hosted 682 walks across 38 counties, resulting in 8,314 walker visits. 👟

From small rural towns to major cities, physicians are stepping outside the clinic to build meaningful connections, share trusted health information, and inspire movement.

For 13 years, we've partnered with TMA, TMA Foundation, and hundreds of volunteer physicians to help Texans live healthier lives - one step at a time.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first national observance of Black History in the US. This centennial reminds us how deeply health, medicine, and community wellness have been shaped by generations of Black physicians, innovators, caregivers, researchers, and advocates.

At Walk with a Doc, we believe health happens beyond the clinic: in parks, neighborhoods, and in every step we take together. We’re especially grateful for our Black walk leaders and walkers, whose commitment, leadership, and presence have helped shape this program, strengthening our communities and moving us closer to a healthier future for all.

Since launching monthly walks last summer, Walk with a Doc - Sudbury has built something truly special.

Led by psychologist Michel Larivière, along with a variety of local physicians, this chapter highlights how powerful walking can be for mental health and overall wellbeing. Walk topics have ranged from pain relief and movement to public health and substance use, offering something new and meaningful each month.

Just as important, they’ve created a strong, consistent group of regular walkers who show up to move, talk, and support one another, proving that community connection is just as important as the steps themselves.

If you're ready to take a step toward better health (both physical and mental), we hope to see you at a walk soon! https://walkwithadoc.org

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.

Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him at a local park on a spring Saturday morning. Healthy snacks, coffee, and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The organization added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recently recognized by the Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health.
