Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

Happy Thanksgiving from Walk with a Doc!

Today we’re especially grateful for everyone who makes this movement possible: the leaders who guide, the walkers who show up, and the communities that welcome us. Thank you for bringing connection, kindness, and healthy movement to life each and every week.

We're wishing you and your loved ones a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. 🧡

We’re excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Walk with a Doc this year!

Since hosting our first walk in Columbus, Ohio, in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown into a global movement spanning 641 communities in 41 countries and 50 medical schools! All around the world, volunteer physicians gather with community members to share important health education, build friendships, and enjoy the healing power of movement.

Together, we’ve built something extraordinary, a community grounded in compassion and connection. Every week, we hear stories of how the simple act of walking together has a tremendous impact:

“We’ve done more than organize walks. We’ve cultivated a culture where prevention feels personal, where care is collective, and where movement is not a chore but a celebration... Walking side by side toward a healthier future.” ~Dr. Munira Abbasi, Volunteer Walk Leader

As you join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary, please consider making a gift of $20 (or more). Your generosity - whether it’s $20, $100, or whatever feels right - keeps our walks free, accessible for everyone, and propels the movement forward. Together, we’re empowering millions to take that first step toward better health.

You can make a tax-deductible gift with the donate button below, or on our website: https://funraise.org/give/Just-Walk-Inc./55888dcb-07ff-4aad-afbe-9d47be24429f

Thank you for walking with us as we build a healthier, happier world.

With gratitude,
Dr. David Sabgir

The Walk with a Doc team had an incredible time at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine conference in Dallas this week!

We loved meeting so many current and future Walk with a Doc leaders who are deeply committed to prevention, healthy lifestyles, and truly caring for their patients and communities.

Dr. David Sabgir and Julia Hotz shared how social prescribing and Walk with a Doc are helping people move more, connect more, and take small steps that make a big difference.

And of course, we joined the 5K Fun Run & Walk!

Thank you, ACLM, for bringing together champions of lifestyle medicine. We’re inspired and excited for what’s ahead. 💚👟🌿

As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate strength, support healing, and remind one another that no one walks alone. This month especially, we walk alongside those who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Did you know? Regular walking can help reduce breast cancer risk, support treatment recovery, boost immune function, and improve energy, sleep, and mood during and after treatment.

Take a walk this week in honor of someone you know who has been affected by breast cancer — and let it be a moment of reflection, gratitude, and purpose.

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.
