Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. With the everyday challenges of life, many of us are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious. One of the simplest ways to reset your mind and body is to go for a walk. Research shows that walking can help:

đź’™ Reduce stress and anxiety
đź’¤ Improve sleep and energy levels
🌿 Boost mood and overall well-being

While you walk, try practicing a little mindfulness: notice your surroundings, the trees, the sky, the sounds around you. Think of a few things you’re grateful for today. Take a few slow, deep breaths.

We hope you're able to take a walk this weekend, whether it's in your neighborhood, a nearby park, or your local Walk with a Doc program: https://walkwithadoc.org

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

Throughout the month, many Walk with a Doc leaders will be discussing colon cancer at their walks, including the importance of screening starting at age 45 and how healthy lifestyle choices (like walking!) can help reduce risk.

Visit a walk near you to learn more. And who knows, you might even end up strollin' through a colon, like this group of walkers in Dauphin County, PA!

"What I've enjoyed most about Walk with a Doc is the genuine connection it creates. Walking alongside community members removes barriers and allows for real, meaningful conversations about health, life, and wellness. It's refreshing to meet people where they are and see how small, consistent steps can inspire lasting healthy habits. The sense of community, movement, and shared purpose makes every walk incredibly rewarding."

- Dr. Dolapo Babalola, Walk Leader in Marietta, GA

In 2005, one cardiologist started inviting his patients to join him for a walk on Saturday mornings. Today, we’ve just enrolled our 700th active Walk with a Doc chapter!

What started as a simple idea has become a global movement, with communities in 40 countries coming together each month to walk with their local doctors. The power of movement, togetherness, learning, and nature is bringing people together in ways we never imagined.

Thank you to the 700 communities who believe in this simple yet powerful mission. We're just getting started, and we're excited to help thousands more bring the program to their communities in the years to come.

From small rural towns to major cities, physicians are stepping outside the clinic to build meaningful connections, share trusted health information, and inspire movement.

For 13 years, we've partnered with TMA, TMA Foundation, and hundreds of volunteer physicians to help Texans live healthier lives - one step at a time.

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.
